✨ Sometimes organizing is about so much more than clutter. ✨
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to spend five hours helping a family who was feeling overwhelmed by the amount of stuff in their home.
Part of the reason they reached out was because their young teen was struggling with letting go of belongings. For her, these weren’t simply “things”, there were emotions, memories, and attachments behind them.
I knew this needed to be handled with patience, understanding, and without shame.
Her mom, her, and I worked through her room together. We started by putting everything into totes so we could create a clean slate. Then, she went through the totes herself and made the decisions about what she wanted to keep and what she was ready to let go of.
We created a simple system:
✨Keep 3 → Donate 1
For every three things she chose to keep, she challenged herself to find one thing she was comfortable donating.
There were moments when making those decisions was difficult and she would get stuck. Instead of getting frustrated, I introduced a simple 10- minute challenge.
We set a timer and gave her 10 minutes to work through the remaining items. When the timer went off, anything she still hadn’t made a decision about became something she needed to seriously consider donating.
It gave her a little urgency while still allowing her to be involved in the decision-making process.
And those little moments are what made this job so meaningful to me. ❤️
This wasn’t just about cleaning up a room. It was about teaching a young person that they can make decisions about their belongings, that it’s okay to let things go, and that memories aren’t tied to every physical item we own.
I also gave her and her mom some small tasks to work on between organizing sessions so they could continue building those habits together.
As a professional organizer, I don’t want to simply come into someone’s home and make everything look nice for a day. I want to help families create systems they can actually maintain.
Sometimes progress looks like a perfectly organized room.
And sometimes progress looks like finally letting go of one item you thought you couldn’t.🫶🏻
✨One tote. One decision. One step at a time.✨
There is absolutely no shame in asking for help. 🏡❤️
