Spring is around the corner, and this is the time of year I start seeing these pop up even more — dryer vents with screens installed over them. I see this setup a lot. It seems like a good idea for keeping pests out, but it turns into a lint magnet fast.

This one was completely packed and airflow was severely restricted. The dryer was working overtime. After a full cleaning, airflow improved dramatically and the system is operating the way it should. 💨

This is a perfect example of why routine dryer vent inspections matter. The exterior termination was completely blocked with lint buildup and debris — so much so that our anemometer reading showed 0.0 airflow at the vent cap. That means the dryer has nowhere to exhaust heat and moisture.

When airflow is restricted like this, moisture-laden air can back up into the vent line and run back down toward the dryer, potentially pooling inside the duct or even inside the appliance itself. Over time this can lead to:

• Excess moisture in the home
• Mold growth inside ductwork
• Premature dryer failure

This was one of those jobs most people would’ve walked away from.
The dryer vent termination was located at the very top of a multi-story roof and tucked in among solar panels, making access difficult and easy to call “inaccessible.”

Instead of stopping there, I safely accessed the area and completed a full cleaning. Vents in locations like this are often ignored, which allows lint to build up and increases fire risk.

I don’t skip work just because it’s inconvenient. If it can be reached safely, it gets done — that’s the difference.

🚨 Dryer Vent Hazard Alert 🚨

On this job, we found two major issues that could have turned dangerous fast:

1️⃣ The dryer vent pipe in the attic had completely disconnected, meaning all that hot, moist air (and lint) was blowing straight into the attic instead of outside. This can lead to mold growth, wood damage, and even fire risk.

2️⃣ The exterior vent had a screen installed that was completely clogged with lint and debris. Screens are not recommended for dryer vents because they trap lint, block airflow, and quickly become a fire hazard.

✅ Proper repair and cleaning are needed to restore safe operation.
✅ Your dryer should always vent directly outdoors, with no screens or obstructions.
