Carpenter Ants: What That "Sawdust" By Your Baseboards Might Mean

Carpenter ants are one of the more misunderstood pests we deal with in the Inland Northwest. Unlike termites, they don't eat wood, but they do tunnel through it to build their nests, and they prefer wood that's already softened by moisture, like around a leaking window, a deck post, or an older roofline.

A few signs to watch for: small piles of frass (a sawdust-like material) near baseboards or window frames, faint rustling sounds inside walls, and worker ants noticeably larger than typical household ants.

Yellow Jacket Activity Is Increasing Across the Inland Northwest

As we move through late July, yellow jacket colonies reach their peak size, which means more foraging workers and more aggressive behavior near homes, decks, and outdoor gathering spaces.

Homeowners often don't discover a nest until someone is stung, since colonies build in hidden spots such as wall voids, ground burrows, and eaves.

A few safety reminders from our team, veteran-owned and family-operated:
Never seal or spray a nest entrance yourself if you're not sure how deep it goes.
Keep food and sugary drinks covered outdoors.
Watch for repeated wasp traffic in and out of one specific spot.
