The STEAM expo was a hit! Culver Community PTO

We did an experiment trying to find the best solution to clean pennies.

What’s your hypothesis for the best cleaning solution for pennies?

The following were used singularly and in combinations to try and clean the coins.
- water
- vinegar (30%)
- baking soda
- lemon juice
- salt
- Dawn dish soap

Fun Fact:

Did you know?
Pennies get tarnished because of a chemical reaction with oxygen in the air. The tarnish is copper oxide, which forms on the surface of the penny over time. Acids break this down and restore the penny’s shine!

Extra Fun Challenge:
Next time you have some pennies at home, try cleaning them with different materials and see if you can discover a new way to make them shine! Share your results with your family and friends!

STEAM Power
Science: We learned about chemical reactions.
Technology: We used a magnifying glass and timer.
Engineering: We tried different methods to see which worked best.
Art: We observed and decorated our findings.
Math: We measured and compared results.
