What is a RioVation® BioMaze® Suspended Biofilm Generator® (SBG®)?

The wastewater industry generally recognizes three biological treatment approaches:

🔹 Suspended Growth

Microorganisms remain suspended in the wastewater where they form settleable flocs. Because these flocs continuously leave the biological reactor with the treated water, they must be separated in a clarifier and returned to the system to maintain the microbial population.

🔹 Attached Growth

Microorganisms attach to a fixed surface where they develop into a stable biofilm. Treatment occurs within the biofilm while only small amounts of biomass periodically slough away.

🔹 Integrated Fixed-Film Activated Sludge (IFAS)

IFAS combines both approaches. Attached biofilm provides treatment capacity while suspended-growth flocs are maintained through sludge recycling and clarification.

So where does the BioMaze® Suspended Biofilm Generator® (SBG®) fit?

The BioMaze® SBG® introduces a fourth approach.

Each BioMaze® pod suspends highly engineered biofilm media within the wastewater at the ideal treatment zone. Fine-bubble aeration attached to the media pods creates an oxygen-rich environment that promotes the growth of a dense, highly active attached biofilm.

But something else happens.

The tank becomes populated with the same diverse community of aerobic microorganisms that live within the attached biofilm. Unlike conventional suspended-growth systems, however, the biological environment created by the SBG® favors attachment to the media rather than the formation of large, settleable flocs.

As biofilm naturally renews itself, microorganisms are continuously released into the wastewater where they remain biologically active, helping treat the entire contents of the tank. Yet because the process is driven by attached biofilm rather than suspended sludge, these organisms generally remain as dispersed cells or very small aggregates instead of forming the dense suspended solids that require clarification and sludge return.

The result is a biological reactor that captures many of the advantages of suspended-growth biology while maintaining the stability and simplicity of an attached-growth process—without clarifiers, return activated sludge pumps, or permanently fixed media.

That is why we call it a Suspended Biofilm Generator® (SBG®).

🌱💧 Ever wonder how onsite wastewater systems remove nitrogen?

It all comes down to some very clever microbes.

In the wastewater treatment process, ammonia is first converted into nitrate (NO₃⁻). Then denitrifying bacteria take over. These microbes need oxygen to breathe, but when dissolved oxygen is scarce, they get creative—they literally "steal" oxygen atoms from nitrate molecules!

As they strip the oxygen away, nitrate is converted into harmless nitrogen gas (N₂), which naturally makes up about 78% of the air we breathe. The nitrogen simply floats away into the atmosphere.

Why does this matter? Excess nitrogen discharged to groundwater, springs, rivers, and estuaries can fuel algae blooms, reduce water clarity, and harm aquatic ecosystems.

Think of denitrifying bacteria as tiny environmental recyclers—breaking down pollution one oxygen atom at a time and helping protect our water resources.

🔬 Biology is amazing. The smallest workers often do the biggest jobs.

🌊 World Oceans Day: Protecting Our Oceans Starts at Home 🌎

From your septic tank to the ocean—every drop matters.
What many people don't realize is that wastewater doesn't simply disappear. Water leaving homes and businesses eventually becomes part of larger ecosystems that connect to our rivers, lakes, estuaries, and oceans.

That's why RioVation® developed BioMaze®—a technology that transforms an ordinary septic tank into a Suspended Biofilm Generator® (SBG®). By creating a highly active biological treatment environment inside the tank, BioMaze® provides advanced wastewater treatment in virtually any tank, anywhere in the world.
The result? Improved treatment performance, reduced environmental impact, and cleaner water returning to the environment.

On World Oceans Day, we're reminded that protecting our oceans begins upstream—with smarter wastewater treatment solutions that help reduce nutrient pollution before it reaches our waterways.

Every tank matters.
Every community matters.
Every drop matters.

🌿💧 Cleaner wastewater. Healthier waterways. Stronger oceans.

🌎 World Environment Day – June 5

Protecting our environment starts beneath the surface.

Every day, millions of gallons of wastewater move through septic systems and into the soil that supports our groundwater, rivers, lakes, and coastal ecosystems. When treatment inside the septic tank is limited, excess organic solids and nutrients are pushed downstream to the drainfield, where they can contribute to biomat buildup, reduced drainage, and unnecessary environmental stress.

BioMaze® improves treatment at the source.

By increasing oxygen transfer and supporting beneficial aerobic bacteria inside the septic tank, BioMaze® helps break down organic waste before it reaches the drainfield. The result is cleaner effluent, healthier soil, improved drainfield performance, and enhanced protection of groundwater resources.

Small improvements below ground can make a big difference above ground.

This World Environment Day, we're proud to support homeowners, contractors, and communities with sustainable wastewater treatment solutions that help protect our most valuable resource—clean water.

🌎 Restore & Protect Your Drainfield. Protect the Environment.

What if your septic tank could treat over 90% of wastewater before it reaches the drainfield? The BioMaze® Suspended Biofilm Generator® Kit from RioVation® transforms conventional septic tanks into oxygen-rich aerobic treatment systems designed to improve effluent quality and support long-term drainfield health.

By reducing organic waste loading and biomat buildup, BioMaze® helps:
✅ Help restore struggling septic systems without excavation
✅ Extend drainfield life
✅ Improve soil treatment performance
✅ Reduce odors and sludge accumulation
✅ Support cleaner groundwater discharge

Unlike costly drainfield replacement, BioMaze® offers an environmentally responsible retrofit solution that works within existing septic infrastructure—helping homeowners and contractors reduce waste, avoid unnecessary digging, and promote sustainable onsite wastewater treatment. 🌱

✔️ No additives or chemicals
✔️ No trenching

A River of Innovation!

Clean water isn’t accidental—it’s a system.

Most people don’t think about how wastewater impacts the water they drink—but it does. Failing or underperforming septic systems can quietly affect soil, groundwater, and ultimately the local water supply.

During National Drinking Water Week (May 3–9), we recognize the infrastructure—and the innovation—that protects our water every day.

RioVation’s BioMaze® Suspended Biofilm Generator® brings treatment directly into existing tanks, improving performance, reducing odor, and helping restore balance to systems that are overloaded or underperforming. By enhancing pretreatment, BioMaze strengthens the entire treatment train—protecting groundwater before it ever becomes drinking water.

Because clean water starts at the source…
—and the source begins at home. 🌊

A River of Innovation!

From our floor to the field in Ghana—thirteen pallets are on the move to support a 20,000 GPD wastewater treatment project.

Treatment in any tank, anywhere in the world.

In this application, an existing trickle filter is currently overloaded. The BioMaze® system is being deployed as targeted pretreatment to strengthen the existing treatment train—reducing organic loading before it reaches downstream processes.

By improving treatment within the tank, BioMaze® helps reduce odor, improve effluent quality, and stabilize overall system performance without the need for major reconstruction or operational disruption.

It’s a practical, scalable approach: enhance what’s already there and restore performance where it’s being pushed beyond design limits.

Another shipment out. Another system ready to perform.
