K.J. Pool & Spa

K.J. Pool & Spa RI’s Oldest Pool & Spa Supply Store! Family owned & operated since 1981! Happily retired! It is one of the hardest decisions we've ever had to make.

Permanently closed.

To our loyal customers, family and friends,
It is with heavy heart we announce the closure of our business KJ Pool & Spa, with our last day Saturday, November 20th. We are officially retiring after 40+ years of business at 719 Pontiac Ave in Cranston. First opened in 1981 by Gene and Marie Hennessey, our day to day lives have been enveloped with water chemistry, pool repairs, inventory and educat

ional seminars. But the one take away we never expected and will take with us is the personal relationships we developed with our customers over the years. Our lives paralleled with so many of you and we watched each other's families grow. In retrospect it has been a gift. We are so incredibly fortunate to have loved our "jobs" and took so much more away from it. Our whole extended family has been involved at one time or another; Steve, Jimmy, Jeanne, Michael, Jeff, Jackie, Da, Mike, Christopher, Matthew, Stephanie, Alyssa, Calvin and Sarah…one by one they either worked behind the counter or helped John and I behind the scenes in more ways than one. I'm sure my father Gene would be proud to know he started a family business whose customers were so loyal and devoted. The "old school" way he taught us to run a business was all we ever knew: with honesty and integrity. Knowing we are closing our doors while "on top" with a great reputation will help us enjoy our retirement with ease. We are looking forward to spending more time with our families and traveling. Beginning today, all cash and carry merchandise will be deeply discounted 25% or more to our customers and service pros. We have solar covers, chemicals, cartridges, fittings, floats, games, skimmers, maintenance equipment and Pentair, Jacuzzi, Waterway and Hayward parts at substantial savings. Shelving and business equipment is also for sale. We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our customers who supported our small family business throughout the years. We know there are many stores in the area to choose from and we feel honored you chose KJ Pool & Spa above the others. We deeply appreciate all of our customers who helped our business thrive over the last 40 years. For us, the hardest part of retiring will be saying "see you later" one last time. It was truly an honor to be a part of your lives. Thank you,
Maureen Hennessey Hager and John Medeiros

Take advantage of the last NE “mild days” to re-secure winter covers and prep for the NE Winter ahead.

Solid covers-Remove excess water and all those leaves, sticks and pine needles.

Mesh covers- Also remove debris from top of cover & check the water level in the pool and drain to 12”-18” below the coping to prep for winter precipitation.

Above ground pools..don’t worry about shifted/deflated pillows under the cover..they are still doing their job.

Don’t put anything other than a liquid algeacide in the pool water at this point..powdered chemicals won’t dissolve and could damage the liner/painted/plaster/pebble surface.

After that, sit back and Dream of Warmer Days coming 😉☀️💦

❄️Pool Closing Season is upon us❄️

A few tips:

❄️Close it Clean, Open it Clean!

❄️Strong algeacide and shock are all your pool needs for closing chemicals on liner pools. Only use quick dissolve shock in cold waters.

❄️Add a metal inhibitor for well water pools.

❄️The only chemistry that is important besides your winterizing chemicals is your pH. Please adjust it before so your closing chemicals bond with the water properly and do a great job keeping the water clear.

❄️PLEASE keep those pool cover surfaces clean of the fall leaves.

❄️If your one of the few who do not cover your pool, please consider putting some floating objects in the pool to give any wildlife or domestic animals a chance to get back out if they fall in. Old noodles tied up like small rafts work great for this..just secure them up on the edges of the pool tying off to fence posts or outdoor furniture legs.

❄️Have an automatic electric vacuum? Before securing the WINTER cover, put your automatic vacuum in the pool for some last minute vacuuming for a day/week.

❄️Works for the spring too..let your automatic vacuum start cleaning the pool before you do right underneath the cover! Helps to move the chemicals around before the pool is functional too!

❄️Solid covers, please don’t let your water get too deep on top..2”-4” MAX going into freezing temps.

❄️For those of you who want to keep your water level up, please be mindful of the fall time rains..once winter is upon us you will not be able to lower the water and chance ice damage on skimmers and coping.

❄️Use Teflon tape on all threaded fittings such as plugs.

❄️Above ground pools! If you are blocking off your inlet/jet with a plug you MUST block of your skimmer with a plate as well to avoid cracking your skimmer from possible ice damage.

❄️If it proves to be a mild fall, add some algeacide under the cover..don’t worry about moving it around as it will make its way throughout the pool water..if you can’t then, add it after Easter next year. Trust us, it works to your favor $$ for the opening.

❄️If the pool did get away from you before the closing and you have to close it up in rough shape, do yourself a favor: add extra algeacide and make a note to open early to save $$…Opening a pool while the water is still cold will be much more economical and sooo much easier/clear faster. You can always place the winter cover back on after clearing til the “stuff” falls from the trees. And don’t worry about the electricity bill..once it’s clear and the cover is on, you won’t have to run it again until you’re ready to swim!

❄️You can still open early AND LEAVE YOUR WINTER COVER ON. Hook up plumbing, clean off cover and start the filter up! Add algeacide and FAST DISSOLVE chlorine shock into pool thru skimmer. This works and saves you $$ for the opening.

❄️Save your chlorine tablets for next year..we’ve seen way too many liner/fiberglass burns from tablets being “stuck” in one place…as the water gets colder, it gets denser and causes the chlorine to “fall” to the bottom of the pool and this is where the chlorine will “pocket”, causing bleaching of the pools bottom surface. Ice has a way of cracking those winterizing chlorine floaters too.

❄️Bring in filter and vacuum hoses to the garage or basement..the freezing temps age the plasticides 10fold.

❄️Dispose of test kit reagents (liquids). They only have a 8-12 mos shelf life. Test strips have a 2 year shelf life and expiration date is on the bottle.

❄️Store liquid chemicals where they won’t freeze, except left over Liquid Chlorine..it’s salt based and won’t freeze but store that away from direct sunlight.

❄️Granular/ powder chemicals can be stored outside in the cold but keep from getting wet by storing in a shed or deck box.

❄️Do not store pH Increaser and pH decreaser together!

❄️Acids should be stored separately from other chemicals.

❄️Toe off heaters and solar covers with opened baggies of cotton balls of doused with peppermint oil..keeps the critters from destroying the electrical components. Also coil up the wires from pumps and salt water systems with the open baggies attached..keeps them safe from the assorted gardening spring clean ups as well…we’ve seen hundreds of weedwhacked electrical cords!

❄️Bring your pump indoors. Leaving it out every winter ages it twice as fast. If leaving it outside make sure to cover it while still letting it air out. Don’t greenhouse/vapor lock it!

❄️Shut the breaker off to the pump(s)…don’t want the timer to keep running over the winter 😳

I’ll add to this post if I think of anything else…feel free to ask ?’s on this post and I’ll answer when I can.

Hope this helps. Miss you all!

☀️💦❄️Enjoy your Winter❄️💦☀️

Hi KJ Pool & Spa Family!

So when we closed shop we had a few things leftover and my husband Jeff who owns Jeff’s Pool Service, was going to use them as he continued HIS business. There’s chemicals, parts, floats and games. Unfortunately he hurt his back and was forced into an earlier than expected retirement, maybe for just this season, we’ll see. So now it’s all up for grabs! Priced to sell and get our garage back 😉. Pics show some items. We have quite a bit of 1 # shock which was purchased over the winter, cases!
Let me know if you are interested.
May be doing a one day sale right out of the ol’ garage. (Would be great to see some familiar faces!)

HOW TO OPEN YOUR POOL along with a few $$$ saving hints…hope this helps you all get started!

Feel free to share!

- [ ] Remove all leaves, debris and water (solid cover) from TOP of winter pool cover with skimmer net and sump pump/siphon

- [ ] Hook up filter system

- [ ] Raise water level

- [ ] Remove DRY 😉 winter cover

- [ ] Adjust pH (can’t tell you how important this is!)

- [ ] Remove leaves

- [ ] Run filter on “recirculate” (check for drips/leaks) for a few hours to mix in the new tap water

- [ ] Brush pool walls and floor

- [ ] Add shock and algeacide

- [ ] When pool is cloudy/clear, run filter system ON “Filter”

- [ ] Vacuum debris daily

- [ ] Point jet(s) downwards, not up

- [ ] Only backwash/clean filter when 8-10lbs above start pressure on pressure gauge..backwashing too frequently will cause the filter to not work efficiently

- [ ] Shock every NIGHT until water is clear

- [ ] Run the filter 24/7 to clear a pool quickly..Ex: if the pool is going to require 48 hours of filter time, you can do it in 2 days or two weeks;either way the electricity will cost the same, but you will spend more money in daily shocking.

Hook up your vacuum and leave it upside down in the center of the pool (as long as there aren’t any leaves) and let it filter that way..speeds up the clearing process with better circulation.

- [ ] Add clarifier when water is cloudy blue if you do not see a noticeable difference in clarity day to day. Give the clarifier a couple days to start working with your filter…if it still isn’t clearing, you may use Floc then vacuum on waste

- [ ] When clear, re-adjust pH & alkalinity

- [ ] You only need to adjust calcium hardness if you have a heater, salt system or cement pool

- [ ] Use stabilizer of you use liquid or granular chlorine but NOT chlorine tablets..they have stabilizer in them

REMEMBER ,
1-Filtration
2-Circulation
3-Chemistry

And please visit your locally owned and operated small business pool stores for your pool needs this summer!

Hi KJ Pool and Spa Pool and Spa Family! Hope you are all getting excited about summer 2022..supposed to be a hot one here in southern NE!
Quite a few of you have been asking us if we are going to open a pop up or sell chlorine this spring.
Short answer is no.
We had every intention of opening up a couple days a week just for the pool opening season to get you all started but we ended up selling the building..so looks like we are 100% retired. ☀️💦☀️💦☀️💦☀️
But we will do our best to answer any questions you have in a timely manner..referrals, chemistry, mechanical.
Thanks!
Maureen and John
