A microscopic killer is lurking where you least expect it: your tap water.

The Naegleria fowleri ameba, ominously known as the “brain-eating amoeba,” is spreading across parts of the U.S. and has been detected in untreated or poorly maintained water supplies.

This rare but deadly organism typically lives in warm freshwater lakes and rivers, but a few alarming cases have emerged where people became infected just from rinsing their sinuses with contaminated tap water.

Once inside the nose, the ameba travels to the brain, causing a fast-acting infection called primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). Nearly everyone who gets PAM dies from it. Of the 167 cases reported since 1962, only four people have survived.

Symptoms strike fast – headache, fever, vomiting, confusion – and death can occur in just days. Fortunately, you can protect yourself: always use distilled or previously boiled water when rinsing sinuses or using neti pots.

Did you know that the CDC estimates that annually, nearly 20 million Americans fall ill due to contaminated drinking water. The way our municipal water is treated and sent to our homes is absolutely disgusting.
