Not all above-ground pool liners are created equal — here’s what you should know....

When it comes to above-ground pool liners, quality matters more than most people realize. The liner is the only thing holding thousands of gallons of water in your pool, so choosing the right one can save you money and headaches down the road.
Here are the main differences:

✅ Liner Thickness (Gauge or Mil):
Thinner liners (15–20 gauge) are cheaper but easier to puncture and typically last only a few seasons.
Thicker liners (25–30 gauge) are more durable, resist tears and fading, and last much longer.

✅ Vinyl Quality:
Not all vinyl is the same. Premium liners use better vinyl that resists UV damage, chemicals, and stretching. Cheap liners can fade, wrinkle, and crack faster.

✅ Manufacturing & Certification:
Some liners now meet CFFA P-101 certification standards, which means they’ve been tested for strength and durability. Many older or cheaper liners were never held to any standard at all.

✅ Pattern & Coating:
Higher-quality liners have better pattern printing and protective coatings to resist fading and staining.

The back of the liner should also be colored—not white. When a white-backed liner ages and the pattern wears, it can show ugly white patchy areas. Colored backing helps the liner look better for longer as it wears.

⚠️ Online Wholesale Liners:
Many liners sold online at wholesale prices are thinner, lower-grade vinyl with limited or substandard warranties. They may look like a deal upfront but often don’t last as long or have proper warranty support when problems arise.

Bottom line: A cheap liner might save you money today, but a quality liner saves you money in the long run by lasting longer and preventing leaks and replacements.

TN Pool Guys is excited to announce that we will be offering above ground pool liner replacement starting Spring 2026.

We will be installing CFFA P-101 Certified Pool Liners—the new industry standard for vinyl liner quality. Prior to 2024, there were no testing standards for vinyl pool liners. The CFFA P-101 certification changed that, setting strict performance criteria so homeowners can trust the quality of their liner.

As part of our commitment to providing ONLY the best, we use liners that meet or exceed ALL P-101 standards, including:

Let me start off with …. We are not doing pool liners. We wanted to get a better understanding of the process and what goes into changing a liner. Today, I was able to pull a neighbors old liner, remove the algea growing under it, repair the floor, slopes and walls due to years of leakage.

I have a new found respect for guys that take on this responsibility for homeowners.

I want to give a special thanks to Jake The Pool Guy for taking time out of his day to give me guidance. Please if you are looking for someone to replace your liner give him call!
