Greetings everyone, as your go-to eco-friendly cleaning lady, I thought I'd share a cherished springtime ritual that I've adopted from my time studying for my aromatic studies certification. Both Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine have been paying close attention to seasonal thresholds for thousands of years and what they describe is something most of us recognize immediately when we hear it. In Ayurveda, we are moving out of Kapha season-the energy of winter heavy and slow and protective. Kapha has been keeping us insulated and inward which is exactly what we needed but now that same heaviness can become stagnation if we don't begin to move it the invitation is to rekindle our inner fire and gently start clearing with the body that has been holding on to. In TCM, spring belongs to the wood element and the liver. the liver is our great mover and transformer when its energy flows freely we feel clear headed and emotionally buoyant but months of winter stillness liver qi can stagnate and we feel it. Tight. A little irritable. Like something that wants to move but can't quite find the door. Does any of this land? This time of year is really common to feel things like a low grade restlessness you can't quite name, that strange mix of wanting to do everything and feeling too tired to start, skin that feels dull or congested after months of indoor air and heavy foods, and a sense of being on the edge of something- a new season, anew chapter-but not quite there yet. Your body isn't confused. It's transitioning. And it could use a little support. one of the things I love most about this time of year is how the plants that come alive in early spring are precisely what we need. Citrus. Juniper. Rosemary. They don't feel like medicine, they feel like a window opening. Scent reaches the limbic system, the part of the brain that governs emotion, memory, and new system regulation-faster than almost any other input. Which means a simple inhale of the right aromatic can shift your state in a matter of seconds. Not metaphorically. Literally. For spring specifically, I keep coming back to a handful of oils that feel like they were made for this threshold moment:
Lemon is the one I reach for when I want to feel clear. There's something almost immediate about it- it cuts through the fog, gets the lymph moving, and has a quality I can only describe as a fresh start.
Juniper Berry is quieter but deeper. Fresh, a little wild, like cold forest air. It has a long traditional use for clearing what the body doesn't need anymore- which makes it a beautiful spring companion.
Rosemary wakes things up. Circulation, focus, the sense that you have a body and it needs to be used. I find it grounding and energizing at the same time, which is exactly what I need while I'm still shaking off winter.
Black Pepper surprises people, but I love it for spring. Warming, stimulating, quietly fiery in Ayurvedic terms it kindles agni (digestion) beautifully.
Grapefruit is the lift. Bright, clean, a little euphoric. Supportive to all above essential oils. When everything else feels heavy, grapefruit reminds you it's almost spring.
I've been blending these into a salt scrub that has become a real ritual for me this season. Here is that recipe:
Spring Awakening Salt Scrub
1 cup fine sea salt- I sometimes do half sea salt, half fine Himalayan pink
1/4 cup of carrier oil- jojoba is my favorite, but sunflower or another carrier oil works beautifully.
For the essential oils (this makes a full batch):
8 drops of lemon
6 drops juniper berry
5 drops Rosemary ct. 1, 8-cineole
3 drops of black Pepper
2 drops grapefruit
Mix everything together and store in a glass jar. That's it.
Consider this a small invitation to meet the season with your hands and your breath. The plants are already doing their part. We just have to show up.
