HOW HUMIDITY AFFECTS YOUR HOME & CLEANING
One thing I’ve noticed over the years as a professional cleaner is that some homes are naturally MUCH more humid than others and certain times of the year make it even worse.
A lot of people think:
- Their house is getting dirtier faster
- Their cleaner isn’t doing a good job
- Their products suddenly stopped working
when honestly… humidity is often the real issue.
Humidity affects:
- Dust buildup
- Odors
- Mold growth
- Dry time
- Air quality
- Product performance
- How long a home FEELS clean
And you can absolutely tell when walking into a humid home.
Signs your home may have excess humidity:
- Bathrooms getting moldy quickly
- A musty smell
- Windows fogging
- Sticky-feeling floors or surfaces
- Dust clumping together
- Towels staying damp forever
- Mildew around vents, showers, or baseboards
- The home feeling “heavy” in the air
One of the BIGGEST things I notice is during the in-between seasons like spring and fall when people stop running their heat or air conditioning and start opening windows.
A lot of people don’t realize your HVAC system does more than heat and cool your home it also removes humidity from the air.
So during those seasons:
- Moisture builds up indoors
- Outdoor humidity comes inside
- Pollen and dust enter the home
- Bathrooms stay damp longer
- Airflow decreases
And honestly? I notice WAY more dust buildup and mold growth in many homes during these times of year.
Bathrooms especially struggle because moisture sits on:
- Grout
- Caulking
- Walls
- Ceilings
- Shower doors
which creates the perfect environment for mildew and bacteria growth.
As a cleaner, humid homes also clean differently.
Humidity makes dust sticky, causes products to dry slower, and can leave streaking or residue behind if you use too much product.
Some pro cleaner tips for humid homes:
- Vacuum FIRST before wet cleaning
- Use LESS product, not more
- Dry sinks/showers after cleaning
- Carry extra microfiber cloths
- Change mop water often
- Turn on fans and ventilation while cleaning
- Don’t oversaturate floors
- Watch hidden moisture areas around windows, baseboards, and vents
Sometimes the issue isn’t that a home is “dirty.”
Sometimes the environment itself is working against cleanliness.
Understanding humidity honestly helps you clean smarter, maintain your home better, and understand WHY certain times of year suddenly make homes feel harder to keep clean.
