A CPST asking another CPST for help? Yep. That was me. And I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

One of the most important things I’ve learned since becoming a Child Passenger Safety Technician is that certification doesn’t mean you suddenly know everything. If anything, it’s made me realize just how much there is left to learn.

There are so many nuances in child passenger safety, and I’m incredibly grateful for the technicians, mentors, friends, and manufacturer reps who continue to share their knowledge and experience with me.

I started sharing car seat safety information because I wanted to make it easier for everyday caregivers to understand. And part of doing that responsibly is recognizing my own limitations, continuing my education, and knowing when to ask for help.

There’s no ego in child passenger safety. There shouldn’t be. We’re all here for the same reason. To keep kids safe. 🫶🏼

Just because someone slapped the word “baby” on it, called it a safety essential, and gave your favorite content creator a discount code doesn’t mean it belongs anywhere near your child’s car seat.

These products are unnecessary. Others can actually interfere with how your car seat is designed and tested to protect your child.

And that’s what should really concern you!

These products are being marketed to vulnerable, sleep-deprived parents and caregivers who are genuinely just trying to do the safest thing for their children. The marketing language can be incredibly misleading, using words like “safe,” “crash-tested,” and “approved” to create a sense of security that may not be supported by the car seat manufacturer.

Many aftermarket accessories aren’t subject to the same federal safety standards as car seats themselves. And unless an accessory is manufactured or expressly approved by your specific car seat manufacturer, you should NOT assume it’s been tested or approved for use with your seat.

Here’s the rule: If it didn’t come with your car seat, don’t use it unless your car seat manufacturer explicitly approves it for your specific model. PERIOD.

You don’t need to buy every gadget, accessory, or viral Amazon find to keep your child safe. You need a properly fitting car seat, correct installation and use, and a little healthy skepticism about what people are trying to sell you. 😉
