TOILET FLUSHING CAN SEND GERMS INTO THE AIR, STUDY FINDS
Researchers at Australia’s Flinders University reviewed 22 studies on what happens when toilets are flushed, focusing on tiny airborne particles known as aerosols.
They found that flushing can create a turbulent cloud containing microbes such as bacteria and viruses, with some aerosols reaching around adult breathing height.
The amount of microbes in the toilet bowl and the volume of flushing water were among the factors linked to higher aerosol levels.
Researchers say better bathroom ventilation and closing the toilet lid before flushing may help reduce exposure, although lids do not completely prevent aerosols from escaping.
The team says safer toilet designs could eventually help reduce the spread of airborne germs, especially in high-risk settings such as hospitals.
