"The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.”

Social economist John Ruskin stated, “It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing what it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot -- it can’t be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

After providing a quote, I’m often met with a statement along the lines of the following: “I have paid anywhere between $15-$25/hour with professionals using their own products so I am not comfortable with your rate.” To which I respond, “Hi _______, I completely understand your concerns but I wanted to address why our services are more expensive than others so that you can make an informed decision on who you hire to enter your home. We are a licensed and insured business. We carry liability insurance, workers compensation, unemployment and pay all necessary taxes (this may seem standard but many cleaning companies do not which puts you at risk). We take the time to properly communicate and train our employees on our processes, methods, and our clients individual needs to offer the highest quality service without cutting corners. We pay our employees a competitive wage to provide them with a work/life balance which is an essential part of our core values. We use the highest quality products that are safe for everyone. We understand our services do not work for everyone’s budget. If you decide it works for you we would be happy to serve you.”

It is true, you get what you pay for. I don’t feel a strong need to explain why our rates are what they are, however, I think a little education can go a long way, and this doesn’t just apply to cleaning or service based businesses, but all businesses. There’s a lot that goes into determining the cost of a service or product. [cont. 👇🏼]
