Ask Dr. Scott: Hearing scratching in your attic at night?

Cool nights send roof rats and mice looking for warm shelter, and your attic is prime real estate. Three signs you have uninvited guests:
• Scratching sounds after dark
• Droppings near the water heater
• Gnaw marks on stored boxes

Traps catch what is already inside. Finding and sealing how they get in keeps them out for good. A mouse can slip through a gap about the width of a pencil, and a roof rat needs only about half an inch.

Save this for the first cold night, and share it with a neighbor who has heard something in the walls lately. Hearing it yourself? Call (979) 774-0486 for a free inspection.

Our copies of the November issue of Neighbors of College Station have arrived, and Dr. Scott Lingren is on the cover with his sons.

Lindsey Bayless wrote "A Life Shaped by Curiosity, Family, and Service," a look at the family, curiosity, and community relationships behind Scott's life and 25 years of Venus Pest Company.

Thank you to Lindsey, Neighbors of College Station, and the neighbors who have been part of our story. Were you part of these 25 years? We would love to hear your Venus story in the comments. And if you receive the magazine, you'll find the feature on pages 4 through 7.

What’s that bug you found around the house or yard? Venus’s local Pest Library has 56 guides to insects and other animals found around Bryan, College Station, and Brazos County—from fire ants and wolf spiders to carpenter ants and their often-confused lookalikes, acrobat ants.

Still unsure? Text us a picture at 979-774-0486 and we’ll help identify it. Some insects are helpful neighbors, too.

After 25 years in pest control, a customer sent us a cockroach we had never recorded from a Venus customer before: the Surinam cockroach.

It spends much of its time in soil around plants and can turn up near patios or even travel indoors with a potted plant. Females can reproduce without mating, but one sighting does not mean your house is infested.

I wrote about what we know from this sighting, earlier College Station records, and why identifying the roach before treating matters. Read it here: https://www.venuspest.com/surinam-cockroaches/

Twenty five years ago, Venus Pest Company began with Dr. Scott working from home, driving a 1989 Ford Bronco with a magnetic door sign and building the business one customer at a time.

We’re honored that The Eagle, sat down with Scott to share the story of how a lifelong interest in entomology became a locally owned company serving Bryan, College Station and Brazos County.

But this story is about far more than one person. It belongs to the employees who have helped keep Venus moving, the customers who have trusted us with their homes and businesses, and the friends and neighbors who have supported us along the way.

Thank you, Brazos County, for 25 years.

🦟 August in the Brazos Valley: The heat is still hanging around like that one relative who overstays their welcome, the evenings are sticky, and mosquitoes are working overtime.

Unfortunately, late summer is also when West Nile virus risk typically increases across Texas.

West Nile is spread through a bird-to-mosquito cycle. Certain mosquitoes—particularly the southern house mosquito—pick up the virus from infected birds and can transmit it to people through their bites.

Most infected people never experience symptoms. About 1 in 5 may develop fever, headaches, body aches, joint pain, or fatigue. Fewer than 1% develop a serious illness affecting the brain or nervous system—but those cases can be life-changing.

Why does the risk rise now?

By late July and August, the virus has had time to circulate among local bird and mosquito populations. Warm nights also speed up mosquito development, while standing water provides ideal breeding sites.

A few practical ways to protect your family:

🪣 Dump standing water every few days—including water in flowerpot saucers, birdbaths, toys, clogged gutters, and low spots.

🧴 Use an EPA-registered repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

👕 Wear long sleeves and pants when possible, especially from dusk through early morning.

🏠 Repair damaged window and door screens.

🌿 Keep vegetation maintained and consider professional mosquito control during peak season.

At Venus Pest Company, we inspect for breeding sites, treat standing water that cannot be eliminated with Mosquito Dunks, and apply monthly barrier treatments to the vegetation and shaded areas where adult mosquitoes rest.

Mosquito control isn’t magic—it’s biology plus consistent work. With regular treatments and good source reduction, we typically achieve an 85% or greater reduction in mosquito bites for approximately three weeks following treatment.

Ready to take back your yard? Contact Venus Pest Company to schedule mosquito service.
