It’s September!

We did it! Thank you everyone who participated! Go Florida!

Wow, Florida. THANK YOU!

We are still smiling, thinking about the incredible response to the Great Southeast Pollinator Census! Floridians showed up in a big way, counting pollinators, collecting valuable data, and demonstrating just how much our communities care about pollinators and the places they call home.

We have officially started tabulating the data and will continue working through the results over the next month. We hope to share the results with you in mid to late October.

A quick reminder: If you participated but have not yet submitted your count, you still have until September 14 to upload your data at gsepc.org.

From what we are seeing so far, we are beyond impressed by Florida's dedication to pollinator conservation. You are truly rockstar community scientists, and we hope you realize that your participation has made a real contribution to science. Every count matters, and together, those counts are helping us better understand the pollinators in our communities.

August was a whirlwind, but watching Florida come together for pollinators made every minute worth it.

From all of us with the UF/IFAS Great Florida Pollinator Census team, thank you for counting with us, sharing your enthusiasm, and helping save pollinators one count at a time.

We cannot wait to share what you helped discover!

Congratulations to club member Lena Huizenga for her winning entry “Body-Positive Bumblebee” in the September Photo of the Month contest. (Yep, that’s three in a row!) This photo was taken in June 2026 at the Alpine Soldier’s Garden located in the town of Villefranche-sur-Mer, France.

The garden is dedicated to the memory of soldiers who served in the Alpine Corp. Fun Fact: Several scenes from the Movie Dirty Rotten Scoundrels starring Steve Martin were filmed just yards away from this garden. Get those entries for October to [email protected]

CALLING ALL COMMUNITY SCIENTISTS - THE Great Southeast Pollinator Census IS OFFICIALLY HERE!!! It's time to count pollinators!!

This conservation activity is open to anyone in the states of , , , , , or ! Join us today, tomorrow, Sunday, and/or Monday to count pollinators across the southeastern United States! That's right, we've added Sunday (8/23) and Monday (8/24) due to expected stormy weather in some of the participating states!

We thought we should share that Responsible Beekeeping is a struggle in other parts of the country. Florida has already legislated protections for beekeeping and we hope that West Virginia follows suit. Read on to discover the struggle that Hives For Heroes mentor Alex has had to endure.

Two beehives. One Supreme Court case. A question that reaches far beyond one backyard. 🐝

Hives for Heroes Mentor Alex Urban’s fight to responsibly keep two honey bee colonies has reached the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals.

And when the implications of his case grew beyond his own backyard, Hives for Heroes stood with him.

Alongside the West Virginia Beekeepers Association, Hives for Heroes submitted an amicus brief in support of Alex’s case and responsible beekeeping across the state.

Because this is bigger than two hives.

It’s about what place responsible beekeeping should have in our communities and how we balance education, accountability and reasonable standards without defaulting to blanket prohibition.

Two hives started this case. What happens next could shape beekeeping in West Virginia for years to come.
