Let’s talk about IKAT!
Not a print, not a conventional tie-dye, ikat is one of the oldest textile techniques in the world, where the yarns themselves are tied off and dyed before a single thread hits the loom.
In this episode of Textile Facts, we break it down.
That signature blurry, directional pattern you see in ikat fabrics comes from the process itself. Bundles of yarn are bound with thread or water-resistant tape, dipped in dye, and the bound sections resist the color. Unbind, rebind, redip, and you start building those complex multicolored designs.
Then it all gets woven into cloth, with the pattern already living inside the threads. The blur isn’t a flaw, it’s the fingerprint of the technique.
If you’re into textiles, design, or just love knowing how things are made, follow along for more behind the scenes fabric magic.
