The first time your heat runs each fall, it blows a summer's worth of dust back into your rooms. Today's Tuesday Tip takes ten minutes. Turn the system off, vacuum your return vent, wipe between the slats with a cloth-wrapped butter knife, and check your filter. Gray means replace. Want the rest of the house handled? Your kitchen still smells like dinner three days later. The filter above your stove is usually why.

Pull it out — there's a latch on the underside, no tools. Soak it flat in the hottest water your tap gives you with dish soap and a quarter cup of baking soda. Fifteen minutes. The grease releases on its own, so you're not scrubbing. Brush with the grain, rinse hot, and let it dry completely before it goes back in.

Fifteen minutes of waiting, about three minutes of work. Do it every three months.

October and November book out first. Thanksgiving is November 26, and the week before it is the busiest week on our calendar every year — it fills before Halloween.

Your refrigerator might be working harder than it needs to.

Behind it (or underneath it) there's a set of coils that release heat. When they're covered in dust and pet hair, that heat has nowhere to go, so the motor runs longer, your power bill creeps up, and the fridge wears out sooner.

Here's the 15-minute fix Ashlee walks through:

Unplug the fridge and pull it away from the wall, or pop off the bottom front vent grille.
Vacuum the coils with the brush attachment. If the dust is packed in thick, a coil brush from the hardware store gets what the vacuum misses.
Clean the door gasket, the rubber seal most people skip. Warm water and a little dish soap, get into the folds, then dry it.

Want to know if your seal is still doing its job? Close the door on a dollar bill. If it slides right out, it's time to replace the gasket.

Do this twice a year.

Most people hear "deep clean" and picture the same clean, just longer. Here is what it actually means on our checklist.

Ceiling fan blades and light fixtures, washed by hand. Baseboards, by hand. Door frames and light switch plates. Window sills and lock ledges. Cobwebs down. Inside the microwave, the top of the refrigerator, the stovetop grates and drip pans. Tub and shower grout double-scrubbed. Beds made and one set of sheets changed.

That is a Top to Bottom clean. It is what a standard clean skips, and it is why our recurring clients never need a second one — the schedule holds the line after that.

The dirtiest six inches in your house is the window track.

Grit falls in every time you open a window, then it rains and the whole thing dries like cement. Spraying and wiping just pushes it into the corners.

Vacuum first, always. Then loosen the corners with a damp stiff brush. Then wipe it out with a microfiber cloth wrapped around a butter knife — the flat edge pulls it out in one pass.

Five minutes a window.
