YELLOW JACKET FACTS:

☑️Meat-Lovers with a Sweet Tooth
Yellowjackets feed on insects, meat, and sugary foods, which is why they crash your BBQ or hover around garbage cans. They’re nature’s cleanup crew — but a dangerous one!

☑️They’re Fierce Defenders
Disturbing a nest can trigger a mass attack. Yellowjackets can sting multiple times without dying and even release a scent to alert others — so never try to handle a nest on your own!

☑️ Look-Alikes — But Very Different Personalities
Yellowjackets and European paper wasps both have black-and-yellow coloring, which makes them easy to mix up. But yellowjackets are stockier, faster, and far more aggressive, especially around food. Paper wasps are slimmer, longer-legged, and usually only sting when their umbrella-shaped nest is threatened.

☑️Ground vs. Aerial Nests — It’s All About the Real Estate
Some yellowjackets build underground nests (often in old rodent burrows) because it’s cooler, hidden, and protected. Others choose above-ground sites like shrubs or eaves when the soil is poor, the ground is too wet, or there’s more space and warmth up high.

EUROPEAN PAPER WASP FACTS:

☑️Architects of the Eaves
European paper wasps build open, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, decks, and patio furniture. They use chewed-up wood pulp to create those papery cells — like tiny builders with attitude!

☑️Natural Pest Controllers
These wasps love eating caterpillars, flies, and spiders, which can be helpful in gardens — but when they nest near homes, their aggressive behavior makes them a hazard.

☑️They Love Warm Spots
European paper wasps are attracted to warm, sunny areas, so homes, garages, and sheds are prime real estate. If you’re seeing lots of wasps around your roofline, they may already be nesting!

☑️They’re Not Shy Around People
Unlike bees, these wasps will nest close to human activity — and they won’t hesitate to defend their space. Even brushing against their nest can lead to multiple stings.

BALD FACE HORNET FACTS:

☑️They Chew Wood to Build Nests
Bald-faced hornets make their nests by chewing up wood fibers into a paper-like material — so if you notice worn or scraped wood on fences or decks, they might be nearby!

☑️Nests Grow Fast — and Quietly
A nest can grow from the size of a golf ball to a football in just weeks. You might not even notice it until it’s already a danger zone near your home or business.

☑️They Can Recognize Movement
These wasps have excellent vision and will spot and react to movement near their nest — even from several feet away. Just walking by can trigger a swarm if you get too close!

☑️Stings Pack a Punch
Their sting is more painful than a typical wasp’s due to their potent venom. It can cause swelling, burning, and in rare cases, allergic reactions — another reason to call a pro!

☑️Unwanted Garden Guests
While they do pollinate a bit, they’re mostly predators. They hunt flies and other insects — helpful in nature, but dangerous when nesting near your home.

☑️They Don’t Survive the Winter
Only the queen makes it through the winter by hibernating. The rest of the colony dies off — but she’ll start a brand-new one next spring.
