YELLOW JACKET FACTS:
☑️Meat-Lovers with a Sweet Tooth
Yellowjackets feed on insects, meat, and sugary foods, which is why they crash your BBQ or hover around garbage cans. They’re nature’s cleanup crew — but a dangerous one!
☑️They’re Fierce Defenders
Disturbing a nest can trigger a mass attack. Yellowjackets can sting multiple times without dying and even release a scent to alert others — so never try to handle a nest on your own!
☑️ Look-Alikes — But Very Different Personalities
Yellowjackets and European paper wasps both have black-and-yellow coloring, which makes them easy to mix up. But yellowjackets are stockier, faster, and far more aggressive, especially around food. Paper wasps are slimmer, longer-legged, and usually only sting when their umbrella-shaped nest is threatened.
☑️Ground vs. Aerial Nests — It’s All About the Real Estate
Some yellowjackets build underground nests (often in old rodent burrows) because it’s cooler, hidden, and protected. Others choose above-ground sites like shrubs or eaves when the soil is poor, the ground is too wet, or there’s more space and warmth up high.
