It's a slow morning at the pool store so we've been setting up displays of winterization items since opening at 9am. A few early birds have already been in for covers and water tubes.

Before you button down your pool for the season, this might be a good time to replace that sand in your filter. Consider the benefits of using Brightline filter media instead.

Your filter does more than just filter and backwash. Going by the customer questions this week, some of us might benefit from a review of the functions of a multiport valve.

Your Spidey Senses should be tingling hearing these bold claims. Let's take a closer look.

Customers have been asking about a pool care product that…
-claims to be "all you're going to need"
-promises an "entire pool routine" in an "all-in-one formula"
-implies you can throw out all your other pool chemicals
-delivers "crystal clear, 100% perfect water in 2 minutes"

Simple Scoop contains a blend of several legitimate pool-care ingredients in one product, including non-chlorine oxidizer (potassium monopersulfate), copper-based algaecide, clarifier, and stain & scale inhibitor. The marketing begins to overreach, however, when it suggests that Simple Scoop can replace the fundamentals of pool care.

Every swimming pool still requires:
🧪 Chlorine
⚖️ pH Balance
📊 Water Testing
🛡️ Stabilizer (CYA)
💧 Proper Alkalinity

No all-in-one product can eliminate the need for those basics.

Simple Scoop does NOT sanitize pool water, nor does it automatically balance water chemistry. Regular testing and proper chlorine maintenance remain essential.

Cost is also worth considering. A 20,000-gallon pool requires a whopping 4-pound startup dose of Simple Scoop followed by 2 pounds per week. At current pricing of $159.99, a 10-pound pail lasts only about a month during peak season.

The copper algaecide component is also relatively modest. Simple Scoop contains approximately 1.98% copper-based algaecide, compared to 13% copper algaecide in Eclipse3. While both products can help prevent algae, the concentration difference is significant. For comparison, a container of Eclipse3 costs considerably less and typically provides enough product for an opening treatment plus weekly maintenance throughout an entire New Jersey swimming season.

Simple Scoop should be viewed as a supplemental maintenance product—not as a replacement for proper water balance, sanitation, and routine testing. As with any pool-care product, understanding what it does—and what it does not do—is the key to making an informed decision.

Have questions about your pool's chemistry? Stop in today—we'll test your water for free and recommend the right treatment.

John, 79, keeps the spirit of Doc’s D&L Pool Supplies alive. As the shop's institutional memory, he teaches new staff the old-school customer service standard set by original owners Doc Genstein and Jerry Senick. This legacy prioritizes personal connection and expert, face-to-face problem-solving. By passing down these values, John ensures that every pool owner still leaves the shop with absolute clarity on how to care for their water.
