Stoughton Septic Pumping Service

Stoughton Septic Pumping Service Owner operated company since 1989 providing septic tank pumping services to residential customers in and around northeast Butler County, PA.

Our company provides important maintenance for on-lot septic systems. It is recommended that a septic tank be pumped every 3-5 years, depending on the number of people living in your home, to maintain a properly working leach field. A septic tank acts as a separator for liquids and solid matter. The solid, more thick matter separates from the liquid and settles to the bottom of the tank while allo

wing only the liquid to discharge out to the leach field area. If the solid ratio becomes too thick it will start to discharge out and eventually start to sludge up the field and not allow the water any where to go. Therefore, it is important to pump tank to remove the solid matter so that you maintain a ratio that is more liquid than solid. The water level in your tank should be approximately 10 inches from the top. The outlet is only approximately 4 inches lower than the inlet. It is also very important to be careful what you put down your drains. Never flush anything but toilet paper, it is the only fiber that will break up within the tank. Personal wipes, paper towels, feminine products, baby wipes, cigarette butts, and "flushable" toilet cleaning products do not break down within the tank. Try to also limit letting grease down drains. Yes, those products all "flush" but they remain floating in the septic tank and do not disintegrate. Proper maintenance is key to maintaining a system and not having a backup into your house as well. Services can be scheduled, questions answered and prices quoted by calling 724-445-3377. We require that the man hole(s) be exposed for us to lift the lid. The 4 inch pipes that some tanks have are only for inspection purposes, they do not allow the hose to be moved around within the tank to remove all the solid matter, which is the purpose of having your tank pumped. Dual compartment tanks usually installed from 1998 on will have two "man hole" lids and both of those lids must be exposed in order to pump out both compartments. Tanks prior to 1998 usually have only one lid, but you may have two tanks. Sorry, we do not offer drain cleaning or repair services. However we are available to pump tanks evenings, weekends and holidays.

We received a call asking if garbage disposals should be used with on-lot septic systems. They were remodeling their kitchen and were wanting to install a garbage disposal. Answering the question was easy, no, they are not recommended. Tap on the link provided and scroll down to “regular maintenance” and it explains why. Composting is a much better option for food scraps.

Septic tank baffles can be baffling. We get calls all the time where a person’s system has backed up into the house, but then drains away slowly or when they flush the toilet there’s a gurgling sound. This is usually caused by a plugged or partially plugged baffle. Trying to clear it using a sewer snake from inside the house is similar to testing a cake to see if it’s done by using a toothpick. It’ll go through okay, but seals itself back off when pulled out. The best way to unclog a baffle is to uncover the top of the tank at the end where the pipe enters the tank from the house. There’s usually a 4 inch cap over top of the baffle that you remove to be able to inspect it. By using a spud bar or sturdy rod, you can successfully clear the clog in the baffle. A bit of advice though….if there’s standing water in the house, be ready to back out of the way when the clog starts to give otherwise you may get splashed! Plugged baffles can also indicate a sludge buildup in the tank, so if it’s been a couple years since it’s been pumped out, it may be due again. I circled the baffle in the photo so you have an idea and better understanding of where it’s located.

Septic tanks receive the raw wastewater from the home and are designed to facilitate the removal of particles heavier than water by encouraging these heavy particles to settle to the tank floor. This is why septic tanks fill up with solids, but how often should septic tanks be pumped to keep them op...
