This carpet was about to cost a Chico tenant his deposit.

Move-out inspection was coming. He'd read the lease, looked at the floor, and figured the carpet was the thing that was going to eat it. Watch the pan at the end. Same carpet, one afternoon, nothing replaced.

Here's the part most renters don't know: a landlord can only charge you for damage, not for normal wear — and soil isn't damage. It comes out. What you want walking into that inspection is a clean floor and a dated invoice with before-and-after photos, which we hand you on every job.

A few hundred bucks to protect a deposit worth a lot more than that. Do the math.

Everyone thinks their shower tile is "just stained." It's almost never stained.

That dull, chalky, slightly rough surface is mineral scale from hard water — plus soap scum bonded on top of it, layer over layer, year after year. And grout is the worst of it, because grout is porous. It's not a smooth surface you're wiping off. It's thousands of tiny openings that hold onto everything and don't let go.

That's why spray-and-wipe doesn't work in a shower. You're not cleaning dirt. You're trying to remove a mineral deposit out of a surface with texture, and that needs a different process and different tools entirely.

Here's the tell: run your hand across the tile. If it feels slightly gritty instead of glassy, that's scale — and it's the reason it never comes fully clean and the reason it gets dirty again so fast. A rough surface grabs.

The reason that spot keeps coming back isn’t the spot. It’s what you cleaned it with.
Almost every store-bought spot cleaner leaves behind a sticky detergent residue. You can’t see it. But it sits in the fibers and grabs every bit of dirt that walks over it. So two weeks later the spot is back, sometimes darker than before, and you clean it again — and the cycle deepens.
What to do instead when something spills:
1. Blot, don’t rub. Rubbing splays the fiber and the damage is permanent.
2. Work outside-in so you don’t spread the ring.
3. Plain warm water and a white towel handles more than you’d think.
4. Weigh a stack of dry towels on it and walk away for a few hours.
5. Call before you try the fourth product. Free advice over the phone, seriously.
A professional extraction rinses the residue back out — which is why properly cleaned carpet stays clean longer, not shorter.

One pass. That’s it.
This tile floor in north Chico hadn’t been cleaned in about 5 years — and honestly, it didn’t look “dirty” to the homeowner. It looked normal. That’s what soil does: it comes on so gradually you stop seeing it.
