This shower is 20 years old. Nothing in these photos is new.

Same tile, same grout, same corner shelves. What came off is two decades of soap scum, body oil and hard-water minerals bonded to the surface. The grout had gone gray enough that it looked like that was its color. It’s not.

That film doesn’t come off with a sponge and a spray bottle, because you’re not cleaning dirt — you’re dissolving a mineral layer. It takes a different process entirely, and then the whole enclosure gets sealed so it doesn’t start rebuilding next week.

A lot of people get a remodel quote for a shower that needed restoring, not replacing.

Harvest dust. Six weeks of it, out of one house.

Almond harvest is wrapping up and walnuts are coming in across Butte County. If your house has felt dustier since August, that's not in your head. Shaking and hauling puts a huge amount of fine orchard dust in the air, and it settles into carpet, upholstery and grout, down where a vacuum doesn't reach. Then it stays there until something pulls it out.

This carpet was about to cost a Chico tenant his deposit.

Move-out inspection was coming. He'd read the lease, looked at the floor, and figured the carpet was the thing that was going to eat it. Watch the pan at the end. Same carpet, one afternoon, nothing replaced.

Here's the part most renters don't know: a landlord can only charge you for damage, not for normal wear — and soil isn't damage. It comes out. What you want walking into that inspection is a clean floor and a dated invoice with before-and-after photos, which we hand you on every job.

A few hundred bucks to protect a deposit worth a lot more than that. Do the math.

Everyone thinks their shower tile is "just stained." It's almost never stained.

That dull, chalky, slightly rough surface is mineral scale from hard water — plus soap scum bonded on top of it, layer over layer, year after year. And grout is the worst of it, because grout is porous. It's not a smooth surface you're wiping off. It's thousands of tiny openings that hold onto everything and don't let go.

That's why spray-and-wipe doesn't work in a shower. You're not cleaning dirt. You're trying to remove a mineral deposit out of a surface with texture, and that needs a different process and different tools entirely.

Here's the tell: run your hand across the tile. If it feels slightly gritty instead of glassy, that's scale — and it's the reason it never comes fully clean and the reason it gets dirty again so fast. A rough surface grabs.
