🚨 Scenic City Outdoor Property Watch

Please don’t pressure wash your composite deck.

This week, we looked at a home with a beautiful composite (Trex-style) deck.

The homeowner had tried to pressure wash it himself…

Unfortunately, the high pressure had started to shred and fuzz the surface of the decking.

Once that protective surface is damaged, it can’t simply be “washed back smooth.”

It’s an easy mistake to make because most homeowners don’t realize composite decking needs to be cleaned differently than many other outdoor surfaces.

Here’s what we recommend:

🪵 Wood decks
Should be cleaned using the least aggressive method possible. In most cases, that means soft washing to safely remove algae, mildew, dirt, and organic buildup before any staining or sealing is considered. The goal is to clean the wood—not damage it.

🏡 Composite decks
Should also be cleaned with low pressure and manufacturer-approved cleaning methods. Soft washing and gentle cleaning solutions remove algae, mildew, and grime without damaging the composite surface.

One of the reasons we started Scenic City Outdoor Property Watch is because we’re on properties across Chattanooga every day, and we get to see the little mistakes that can turn into expensive repairs.

If we can help one homeowner avoid damaging a deck, roof, or siding by sharing what we see, then it’s worth taking a few minutes to post about it.

Have you ever learned the hard way that something around your home couldn’t be cleaned the way you expected?

👇 We’d love to hear your story in the comments.

Today reminded me that every property has a story.

This morning I met with a homeowner who had filled her yard with native plants, herbs, wildflowers, and pollinator-friendly gardens. She loved everything she’d planted—but some mowing companies don’t know the difference between a w**d and intentionally planted native plants.

Later, I met with another homeowner who has created an incredible little food forest in the middle of an HOA neighborhood. Every plant has a purpose. Every corner supports something else. It just needs a little structure so it looks as intentional as it really is.

Then I finished the day helping another homeowner solve a completely different problem.

Three homes.

Three completely different goals.

It reminded me that landscaping isn’t about making every yard look the same.

It’s about helping homeowners create a property that works for their lifestyle.

Some people dream of perfectly striped grass.

Some people want butterflies, herbs, and native flowers.

Some people want a backyard where the grandkids can run and play.

Some people just want one less thing to worry about.

There isn’t one “right” way to care for a property.

The goal is to make it intentional.

That’s one of my favorite parts of this job—learning what matters to each homeowner and helping bring that vision to life.

If you’ve got ideas for your property but aren’t quite sure how to pull them together, we’d love to help.

More fertilizer isn’t always better.

Think about trying to feed someone who’s sick.

Food helps…

But first you need to address what’s actually wrong.

Lawns work the same way.

If the soil is unhealthy, adding more fertilizer often won’t solve the problem.

That’s why we start with understanding what’s happening beneath the surface.

One piece of equipment… a whole lot of new possibilities.

This week has been a busy one, and one of the biggest additions to Scenic City Outdoor has already been earning its keep—our new dump trailer.

What does that mean for our customers?

âś… Junk removal
âś… Brush and limb haul-off
âś… Landscape debris removal
âś… Property cleanups
âś… Storm cleanup
âś… Mulch, rock, and soil delivery
âś… Large landscape projects

Sometimes the biggest part of an outdoor project isn’t the work itself—it’s figuring out what to do with everything afterward.

Whether you’re cleaning out a garage, clearing overgrown areas, trimming trees and shrubs, or tackling a landscaping project, we’ve got a way to haul it away.

We’re always looking for ways to better serve our customers, and this is another step toward being your one call for outdoor projects.

If you’ve got a pile that’s been growing bigger every weekend, we’d be happy to help make it disappear.

Why does one lawn stay green while the neighbor’s turns brown?

It isn’t always because they water more.

Sometimes it’s:

• Better soil biology
• Deeper root systems
• Less compaction
• Better organic matter
• Grass varieties better suited to our Tennessee climate

A healthy lawn starts long before fertilizer is ever spread.

We’re thinking about opening another residential mowing route…

When we started Scenic City Outdoor, our focus wasn’t mowing.

We built our business around helping homeowners care for their property through services like soft washing, landscaping, roof washing, deck staining, and other outdoor projects.

But something kept happening…

Homeowners would ask,

“Do you mow, too?”

They trusted the quality of our work and wanted one company they could rely on to take care of their property. So we added residential mowing to better serve the people who were already trusting us with their homes.

Today, our current residential mowing route is completely full.

First of all, thank you. We’re incredibly grateful for the trust you’ve placed in us.

Because of the demand, we’re considering opening another residential mowing route.

If you’ve been looking for a company that:
âś” Shows up when they say they will
âś” Communicates with you
âś” Takes pride in every property
✔ Treats your lawn like it’s more than just another stop on the schedule

…we’d love to hear from you.

We’re currently building a list of interested homeowners. If there’s enough demand to create an efficient route, we’ll open another one.

If you’d like to be considered, send us a message or call/text 423-888-2203.

Your grass isn’t actually the problem.

Most struggling lawns aren’t starving…

They’re growing in unhealthy soil.

If the soil is compacted…
If beneficial microbes are missing…
If water can’t penetrate…
If roots can’t breathe…

No amount of fertilizer is going to magically fix it.

At Scenic City Outdoor, we look at the entire ecosystem—not just the grass on top.

Healthy soil grows healthy lawns.

Some days aren’t spent on the jobsite—they’re spent making sure the job is done right before we ever get there.

Today’s Home Depot run has two very different projects in the cart.

🎨 Five gallons of BEHR Premium Semi-Transparent Waterproof Stain & Sealer for an upcoming deck staining project. We get asked all the time what stain we recommend, and after trying different products, this is the one we’ve chosen to stand behind because it provides excellent protection while still letting the natural beauty of the wood show through.

🪨 Several different landscape stone options for another client. Instead of asking someone to pick from tiny pictures online, we’re bringing samples to her property so she can see the colors and textures in person while we design her new front landscape beds.

It’s little things like this that most people never see.

A lot of thought goes into every project before we ever unload a tool. Choosing the right products, helping clients compare options, planning the details, and making sure everything is ready before work begins are all part of delivering a finished product we’re proud of.

Whether we’re staining a deck, designing a landscape, soft washing a home, or maintaining a lawn, our goal is always the same:

Do it right the first time.

If you’re planning an outdoor project, we’d love to help. Whether you already know exactly what you want or just have an idea and need some guidance, we’re here to make the process as easy as possible.

🕷️ PSA for Chattanooga-area homeowners… Joro spiders are here, and they’re spreading fast.

Yesterday alone, we found Joro spiders at four different properties—two in Soddy-Daisy, one in Hixson, and one on Signal Mountain.

The surprising part?

Not a single homeowner knew what they were.

A few years ago, my mom spotted just two Joro spiders around her house.

The next year, there were hundreds.

Now, just a few years later, there are so many that it’s impossible to count. Their webs stretch from tree to tree, across the yard, on homes and decks, and they’re everywhere.

If you’ve never seen one before, the females can grow surprisingly large—sometimes with a leg span approaching the size of an adult’s hand. The males, on the other hand, are much smaller and often go unnoticed.

We’ve even heard reports of small birds becoming tangled in their incredibly strong webs.

One property we worked on while preparing it to be sold had so many Joro spiders that the power line over the driveway looked like it was decorated with webs. It was unlike anything we’d ever seen.

The good news?

Joro spiders aren’t considered dangerous to people, but they are an invasive species that’s becoming much more common throughout our area.

If you start seeing them around your home, it’s a good idea to knock down their webs regularly. Over time, if they’re constantly having to rebuild, they’ll often relocate to an area where they’re less disturbed.

As we’re working throughout Chattanooga every day, we’re seeing more and more of them.

And while no exterior cleaning can eliminate spiders forever, a professional soft wash removes cobwebs, spider webs, and the organic buildup around your home’s exterior that gives spiders places to settle.

Have you seen a Joro spider around your home yet? Tell us what area you’re in—we’re curious how widespread they’ve become.

📞 Call or text 423-888-2203 if you’d like your home’s exterior cleaned and those old webs removed.

When this homeowner first reached out, he thought he just needed someone to blow the leaves and debris off his roof.

When we took a look, we found a little more than that.

The debris definitely needed to be removed, but the roof was also starting to develop algae and mildew. Left untreated, that growth can continue to spread and slowly shorten the life of your shingles.

So we put together a plan that included:

âś” Removing the debris from the roof
âś” Cleaning out the gutters
âś” Protecting the landscaping around the home
âś” Soft washing the roof to safely treat the algae and mildew

The homeowner told us something that really stuck with me.

For years, he had always climbed up there himself to blow the leaves off. But he’s reached the point where he just doesn’t feel comfortable getting on the roof anymore.

Honestly, we don’t blame him.

While we can often soft wash a roof from the ground, this particular job required us to get on the roof. The difference is that we have the proper equipment and training to do it as safely as possible. We use specialized roof-grip footwear, safety equipment, and techniques designed for walking on roofs—things most homeowners simply don’t own or have experience using.

While we were working, one of the neighbors came over to ask about the project. There’s no better compliment than having someone notice the difference before the job is even finished.

If your roof has black streaks, algae, moss, or debris building up, we’d be happy to take a look and give you an honest recommendation. Sometimes a simple cleanup is all that’s needed. Other times, a roof wash is the best way to protect your investment.
