Rain came back, but your lawn is not automatically recovered.

Charlotte lawns have been under real drought stress, and a few storms do not rebuild weak roots, fix compacted soil, or close up thin areas overnight.

In many cases, color returns before the lawn is truly healthy underneath.

That thin turf can open the door for w**ds, disease pressure, mosquito activity, and additional summer stress.

We put together a breakdown of what Charlotte homeowners need to know right now and how to think about lawn recovery after drought conditions.

That w**d in your lawn? It found a weak spot.

Stressed turf from summer heat and drought leaves gaps, and clover, crabgrass, and nutsedge fill them fast.

Spraying helps. A thicker, healthier lawn wins.

We put together a breakdown of the most common w**ds we see in Charlotte lawns and what it takes to get them under control:

Charlotte is heading into one of its driest stretches in years. Mandatory water restrictions go into effect May 15th.

Our clients aren't worried. Not because the drought isn't real — it is — but because the work has already been done. Deeper roots. Healthier soil. A lawn that was built to hold when conditions get difficult.

That's what professional turf care looks like before anyone else realizes they needed it.

If you're not already on a program with us, now is the time to change that. We'll assess where your lawn stands and build a plan to carry it through.

Mowing during drought and heat? Your blade height matters more than ever.

Tall Fescue — Keep it around 4"
Taller grass shades the soil, retains moisture, and gives your lawn the resilience to push through heat, drought, and disease pressure.

Zoysia & Bermuda — Keep it around 1.5"–2.5"
These grasses perform well at a lower height, but should never be scalped during drought or extreme heat.

The biggest summer mowing mistake is cutting too short. Keep your blades sharp. Never remove more than one-third of the blade at a time. Give your lawn every advantage while it's fighting the heat.

Small details make a big difference in how your lawn holds up through summer.

Ticks are more active in Charlotte lawns than many homeowners realize.

A consistent mosquito control program can also help reduce tick activity around the property.

Mosquitoes and ticks often rest in many of the same shaded, protected areas around the lawn and landscape. That’s why consistent treatments can provide broader protection than homeowners may expect.

A properly timed program helps create a more comfortable outdoor space for your family and pets.

Charlotte lawns are making the shift from spring watering to summer watering.

As temperatures rise, we’re starting to see more tall fescue lawns lose color and show signs of stress in areas that dry out faster.

This is the time of year when consistent watering starts to matter more, especially in sunny or exposed sections of the lawn.

The goal is to stay ahead of stress before turf begins to thin out and recovery becomes more difficult.

If your lawn has not moved into a summer watering routine yet, now is the time.

Did you miss the pre-emergent window in Charlotte?

Maybe. But that does not mean your lawn is out of the game.

The ideal timing for pre-emergent is usually late February through mid-March, before many spring and summer w**ds begin to germinate. By early April, that window may be narrowing or already closed depending on weather and soil temperatures.

The good news: one missed window does not mean a lost lawn.

A smart turf program can still make a major difference through targeted w**d control, proper turf nutrition, and building thicker, healthier growth as the season moves on.

The biggest mistake homeowners make is assuming it is too late and doing nothing. In most cases, there is still a strong path forward.

If you are not sure where your lawn stands, we’d be happy to take a look.

What order should you treat your lawn in spring?

Spring moves fast here in Charlotte. One week it still feels like winter. The next, your lawn is greening up and w**ds are starting to show.

Get the sequence wrong, and you’re playing catch-up all season.

Get it right, and your lawn has a much better chance to thicken up, green up, and fight off w**ds naturally.

Here’s the order that works:

✅ Pre-emergent — stops w**ds before they start
✅ Light fertilization — feeds the lawn without overstimulating growth
✅ Post-emergent — cleans up breakthrough w**ds
✅ Proper mowing — helps strengthen and thicken turf
✅ Deep watering — encourages stronger root growth
✅ Monitor and adjust — because Charlotte weather changes fast

The best lawns do not happen by accident. They happen by following the right steps, in the right order, at the right time.
