While most re-homed fish end up in other home aquariums, this cichlid went to the lobby tank at Upper Moreland Library. Fish rehoming is important in kind service that is offered & has helped give new homes to fish when a tank is being taken down, fish grew large or not getting along with other inhabitants.

Before (bottom) and after (top) shots of the most vivid tank overhaul and re-scape I've done. On the left is a lightly planted setup that had an issue with carpeting algae. On the right is a fish-only setup needed a facelift and had brown algae on the decor. Both tanks are on service schedules adjusted to the tank and client needs. After each service, tips and suggestions are given as needed to maintain or improve the health of the tank and fish.

How long should the tanks lights be on?
It depends on the type of setup(fish only, planted, reef), ambient light, and when you or other people will be in the room.
General guidelines (first range is for a well lit room or area with a window, second is for a dark room, basement or area with inconsistent lighting):
- For fish only tanks, 3-6 hours, 6-7hrs if in dark area
- For planted tanks, 7-8 hours, 8-10 hrs if in dark area
- For Reef tanks, 8-9 hours, 9-11 hrs if in dark area
Natural light from windows will decrease the amount of light needed especially for fish only setup. On the other hand, a tank in a basement or room with no windows will need more hours of light to keep fish happy and healthy. Plants do well with 7-9 hrs while corals need 8-11 hours. You may also want change hours or time of day the lights are on depending on the foot traffic, special event and when you enjoy the tank. Too much light will contribute to excessive algae growth but too little can negatively affect the biological cycles of your fish, plants or corals.

4 Types of Cloudy water & how to resolve each
1. White cloudy water after adding sand, gravel or after vacuuming gravel- suspended particulates, use a clarifier like API Accuclear or Seachem Clarity or clean/replace filter pad and wait
2. Tan and yellow tinted water- tannins from wood decor and leaves, change 20% of water and replace activated carbon cartridge or bag in filter
3. White and yellowish water, when no substrate is added or stirred- bacterial bloom from overfeeding, adding too many fish at once or cleaning tank or filter media with untreated tap water. Cut feeding in half and Test pH, Ammonia and nitrite. If Ammonia and nitrite are present do a 30% water change, replace with conditioned water and add a bacterial additive after 1 hr. If pH drops to 6.5 or 6.0, then add a Proper pH powder or pH up
4. Green cloudy- free floating algal bloom. Reducing hours light is on and add an algaecide like Algaefix or Tetra AlgaeControl. Vacuum gravel weekly to remove dead algae. If problem is persistent, install a UV sterilizer
