How long should the tanks lights be on?
It depends on the type of setup(fish only, planted, reef), ambient light, and when you or other people will be in the room.
General guidelines (first range is for a well lit room or area with a window, second is for a dark room, basement or area with inconsistent lighting):
- For fish only tanks, 3-6 hours, 6-7hrs if in dark area
- For planted tanks, 7-8 hours, 8-10 hrs if in dark area
- For Reef tanks, 8-9 hours, 9-11 hrs if in dark area
Natural light from windows will decrease the amount of light needed especially for fish only setup. On the other hand, a tank in a basement or room with no windows will need more hours of light to keep fish happy and healthy. Plants do well with 7-9 hrs while corals need 8-11 hours. You may also want change hours or time of day the lights are on depending on the foot traffic, special event and when you enjoy the tank. Too much light will contribute to excessive algae growth but too little can negatively affect the biological cycles of your fish, plants or corals.
