“… so that you will behave properly toward outsiders and not be in any need.”
1 Thessalonians 4:12
It’s a simple teaching of practical Christian living: Make good use of your time… Use the gifts God has given you… Be productive. As a steward of all that God has entrusted to you, you’re to apply yourself to the task before you – to be diligent, hardworking and dependable. As you live your life with eyes fixed on Jesus, you’ll be an exemplary employee – with little need for anyone to look over your shoulder. You’ll recognize you have a heavenly Supervisor, and your work will be done with an awareness of God’s presence. You’ll be a kind, patient and generous employer, respecting those who work for you. You’ll recognize their unique gifts, express appreciation for their work, listen to their ideas and honor their time. And when others observe your behavior, they’ll see glimpses of Jesus Himself. They’ll witness God’s activity in the world through your words and deeds. You’ll be a giver, not a taker. You’ll not only be able to provide for your own; you’ll also have something to share with those in need. You’ll be a model citizen – one anyone would want on their team. It’s all part of the Christian ethic. You may not always get it right. But as you continue to be influenced by the One you name as Master, your life will be shaped by His own. And in this way, you will live into that title Christian and honor and respect the One who alone is worthy to bear it.
