Did you know that there are more types of algae than we as humans even know about! In the pool industry we dumb it down to colors, black algae , green algae , mustard algae etc etc. Its more than common to get spots of algae in pools especially in our hot summer months. The most alarming thing about algae is it splits its molecules and spreads double every 6 to 8 hours!! One square foot becomes 2 square foot and overnight your pool becomes a swamp.
Things that cause algae
1. High cya to low chlorine ratio
Always have 7.5 percent chlorine to cya in the pool!
2. Low chlorine
Try and maintain a 3ppm chlorine level in the summer months
3.poor circulation
Too few returns (eyeballs), undersized pump or broken pump, some pools are older and not built to the standards of our new understanding of pools. Borate treatments work wonderfully for low flow pools!
4. Filtration
While a filter alone won’t turn a pool green it serves as a backup system when a chlorine demand fails , catching the bacteria that would normally circulate the pool. If a filter is so clogged it can slow the flow, bringing us back to the 3rd reason algae grows.
