Drought stress is showing up in lawns all across Southwest Florida right now, and with temperatures continuing to rise, turf is definitely feeling it.

The truth is, it does not matter who services your property or what products are being applied. If your lawn is not receiving adequate water, it WILL begin showing signs of drought stress.

One of the biggest things homeowners can do right now to help protect their lawn is make sure it is being mowed at the proper height.

For St. Augustine grass, that means keeping it cut HIGH, generally around 3.5 to 4 inches depending on the variety and mower.

Why does mowing height matter so much?

A taller lawn creates a thicker canopy that helps shade the stolons and soil surface. That shade helps reduce moisture loss from heat and wind evaporation while also protecting the runners from excessive sun exposure and heat damage.

Proper mowing height also encourages a healthier root system and helps the turf withstand drought stress more effectively. A dense canopy can even help reduce w**d pressure naturally.

On the other hand, mowing too low or scalping the lawn creates additional stress on the turf. Scalped lawns dry out faster, weaken over time, and become much more susceptible to drought damage, w**ds, insects, fungus, and disease pressure.

Healthy turf starts with proper cultural practices, and mowing height is one of the most important ones.

If your lawn is struggling during this dry stretch, now is the time to focus on reducing stress wherever possible.

🚨 Industry Alert for Southwest Florida Lawns 🚨
Sugarcane Mosaic Virus Confirmed Locally

Our team is currently seeing a rise in Sugarcane Mosaic Virus (SCMV) affecting turfgrass in Southwest Florida, with multiple confirmed cases right here. As lawn and ornamental professionals, we want to make homeowners aware of what this means and what to watch for.

What is Sugarcane Mosaic Virus?

Sugarcane Mosaic Virus is a plant virus that infects turfgrass - especially St. Augustinegrass, the most common lawn grass in Florida. Once present in a lawn, the virus infects the plant tissue and spreads through the grass system.

One of the biggest concerns is that the virus can progress into a severe condition called Lethal Viral Necrosis (LVN). When this occurs, entire sections of turf — and sometimes the entire lawn — can decline and die over time.

Why This Matters for Florida Lawns

Many Florida landscapes rely heavily on Floratam St. Augustinegrass, which unfortunately is highly susceptible to this virus. Once infected, these lawns often decline gradually and may completely die within 1–3 years.

Even more concerning:
⚠️ There is currently no chemical cure for this virus. Fungicides and insecticides do not control it.

What to Look For

Early symptoms are often mistaken for nutrient deficiencies or fungal disease. Signs may include:

• Yellow or light-green streaks across grass blades
• A blotchy “mosaic” pattern on the leaves
• Gradual thinning or patchy areas in the lawn
• Turf turning brown and dying back over time

Symptoms often become more noticeable during cooler months and seasonal stress periods.

How It Spreads

This virus spreads primarily through sap transfer, which means it can move from lawn to lawn through:

• Lawn mowers
• String trimmers and equipment
• Grass clippings
• Contaminated machinery or vehicles
• Certain insects

For this reason, sanitation practices and equipment hygiene are becoming increasingly important in professional lawn care.
