Mom On A Mission!

Mothers of all species care deeply about their offspring. My 34 year experience has taught me that the older the babies get, the stronger the mother raccoon’s maternal instinct is.

It is also my experience that raccoons are as individualistic as humans. Some are shy, some are indifferent, and some are down right aggressive when it comes to protecting their offspring.

Unfortunately for us, we never know what personality trait we are up against until we are face to face with the raccoon, knee deep in insulation and trying to balance on the ceiling joists.

In this particular case, the mother raccoon was determined to protect her young at all costs. But lucky for us while she was distracted, we took the opportunity to rush in and scoop up the six babies and got out of the attic before she knew what happened. Upon taking them onto the roof to place in our heated release box, the mother heard their chittering and came out of her entry hole like a locomotive. Forced to give her some space, we watched her relocate her babies one by one to an alternate den site in the neighbourhood.

As we get into high season here in Southwest Florida it is cooling off and wildlife is looking for places to move into homes and businesses to have their babies.
This weekend, take a walk around your place and see if you have any possible entry points that need to be closed up. Before doing a full repair, cover the hole with plastic or paper and if you see no activity for 3 days, it is usually safe to do a proper repair at that time frame.

Did you know that in Florida raccoon mothers have babies (called kits or cubs) every month of the year? Up North, "baby season" is in the Spring. Here in Cape Coral area, raccoons still only have babies once a year, but, it could be during any month. Always be aware of this if you think you have raccoons in your attic - babies do not know what baits and lure are - only mom's milk. Because of this, if you trap and remove mom, what happens to the babies? A trap is not the answer and the babies will die within 7-9 days!
Please call before you try to trap raccoons from your attic.

It may not look like it, but, this is a raccoon family eviction and exclusion done on a Cape Coral attic. The raccoons were living in the attic - mom and her babies - called kits and cubs. Via a several step process I manipulated mom to remove her babies and take them elsewhere. No raccoons were trapped or relocated during this process. I gently asked mom to do that work for me. After the raccoons removed themselves, I repaired the home so they could not enter again.

Because of the warm climate, raccoons can have babies all year round in the Cape Coral area. Before setting a trap, think about what happens to the baby raccoons in the walls and ceiling... We know what to do.

We recently had a raccoon family living in this Tulsa attic. The mother raccoon tore down this attic screen and had her babies in the attic. We utilized a spring loaded one way door after we manipulated the mother into relocating her baby raccoons from the attic one by one and taking them elsewhere. When we were done, we replaced this attic screen so she cannot get back into the attic.

Here are some baby raccoons we cut out and removed from a wall in Tulsa last spring after a do it yourself raccoon removal homeowner trapped and relocated the mother raccoon. These orphan raccoons ended up at a wildlife rehabilitation clinic.

Perhaps the raccoons in this Tulsa attic thought the sign said "defecate here"... Yuck. The raccoons were removed, repairs were made and we sanitized the attic.

I took this photograph in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma recently when the caller complained about having squirrels in the attic. This is raccoon f***s on his roof. Raccoons do this to mark their territory. Because the client said they heard activity only during the day time, I thought perhaps the raccoon had left and squirrels had moved in to the attic, and that made sense because half of the f***s was pretty old. Later that day when an employee called and explained how a raccoon charged out of a hole in the roof and chased him off the roof, I figured it was safe to assume he indeed does have raccoons in the attic!
