Memorial Day is more than the beginning of summer.

It is a day to pause and remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country — and the families who carry that loss long after the ceremonies end.

A folded flag weighs only a few pounds, but to those who receive it, it carries a lifetime of sacrifice, love, and memory.

This Memorial Day, we honor the fallen, remember their families, and give thanks for the freedoms secured at such great cost.

A fun “granite” nugget —

The curling stones used for the Milano–Cortina 2026 Olympics were made in Scotland by Kays Curling, the world’s premier curling-stone maker.

They’re crafted from rare granite quarried on Ailsa Craig, a small island off Scotland’s southwest coast. This granite is incredibly dense and low-porosity, which means it absorbs almost no water — perfect for withstanding years of collisions and gliding smoothly over ice.

Each stone combines two types of granite:
• Common Green for the body
• Blue Hone for the running surface that touches the ice

Much of this granite was quarried decades ago and carefully stockpiled, since modern extraction on the island is tightly restricted to protect wildlife.

So when you watch curling, you’re really watching precision Olympic equipment made from rare Scottish stone, shaped by hand, and built to last for generations.

Paul Smith’s College student Nick Graanone pulls a ground-penetrating radar device with Clarkson student Julia George behind him reading the outputs. Several students from both Paul Smith’s and Clarkson volunteered in February to search for evidence of unmarked graves in a section of Vermontville’s Union Cemetery known to hold the graves of African Americans that are part of the Gerrit Smith Black Settler story including John Thomas and Louisa Brady. The stone on the left belongs to Stephen Warren Morehouse. Morehouse served in the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment (one of the first Black regiments of the Civil War and featured in the movie “Glory”), worked as a guide for Paul Smith, and was John Thomas’s son-in-law.
