While wet wipes are the focus during this year’s , building better habits that last long after October is over is also important for extending the life of your septic system. Items such as cotton swabs, dental floss, and hygiene products should also be thrown away rather than flushed down the drain.

Building the habit of throwing away items that do not belong in your drains can save you money in the long run by avoiding costly repairs to your septic system. Remember, toilet paper and human waste are the only items that should be flushed down the toilet!

Wet wipes are a hazard to flush down your septic system due to the potential of containing hidden plastics. Items containing hidden plastics will not break down in your septic system and can clog pipes or wrap around your aerator shaft leading to costly repairs.

Just because wet wipes are labeled as “flushable” does not mean they are safe for your pipes or septic system. This , remember that wet wipes belong in the bin and not down the drain!

Planting trees and shrubs on your drain field can cause damage to your pipes from the weight, and the roots.
