And God took from Adam a rib, to fashion for him a helper, to stand by his side, through thick and thin, sickness and in health.

May all you beautiful Helpers have had a Blessed and Peaceful Mother’s Day.

I’m looking for a service technician, again. Cody has decided to pursue another opportunity, and we wish him well. He may come help with filter cleans or covering pools, in the future.

So, if y’all know anyone looking for a job, I’m looking for a couple part-timers or a full-timer. Please, shoot me a text or give me a call at (214) 507-5225 to discuss.

Helper Wanted

We are going into our third year as a company, and it's time to make that "we" plural. I am currently looking for a part time helper to service pools with me. At present, I need someone to work Tuesdays and Thursdays, but this can easily expand to a full-time solo gig in just a couple months. 9:00 am until we are done, typically about 8 hours a day.

I'm not "looking" for experience. I intend to find my protege, this year, to become my Lead Service Specialist by next year. We aspire to be "the best." Therefore, I want these cats skinned in a particular way.

I will continue to be the Mechanic, Salesman, etc. In this role, I'm primarily concerned with Pool Service; i.e. netting, brushing, balancing chemistry, and service level equipment maintenance. The "hard stuff" will still rely on my hands.

This is not a "hard job" but it is physically demanding. This job is a great way to get in shape, and I can educate a motivated trainee to be independent in about two weeks. I intend to have this helper with me for at least a month before I "let 'em loose."

Initially, pay scale can range from $10 - $20 per hour. Integrity, ambition, and accountability will factor into the agreed upon pay rate. Days and hours are negotiable. We can work around a college class schedule. I will happily pay a vehicle allowance for this helper using their own truck, once they are solo. I am in the process of finding more trucks for our "fleet" too.

For any further details, please, call or text.

Good advice from my favorite sweeper manufacturer. For the most part, though, WE roll through the winter. If I can get caught up, I think I’ll take a quick dip myself on Sunday. Maybe cleanse my spirit after I feed my soul…

It looks like we’ve got a nice chill headed our way in North Central Texas. I prefer to maintain service, year round, as not everyone wants a pool cover, and I myself enjoy a good season of Wim Hoff style health. It also lets me really dial in the chemistry and apply a calmer and more grateful mind to our equipment, and it’s going to be a very busy spring…

So, I’m thinking a lot about freeze guards and leaf litter, lately. We’re going to turn down some pumps and cover a few pools. If we haven’t talked about it, yet, I’m sorry. Give me a call or shoot me a text. Otherwise, I’ve got it all in hand to keep going.

Happy Fall. Happy Thanksgiving. And, if I don’t see you, have a Blessed and Merry Christmas!

Happy Mother’s Day to you all, and regardless of one’s presence in your house, thank you for your mother, too. If not for her, we never would have met😉

How often should I clean my filter?

Let’s go ahead and get the most frequently skipped point of note out of the way:
Many manufacturers recommend cleaning your filter every 3 to 4 months.
If your pool sees a lot of Cheetos and baby wipes, or the petting zoo decides to cool off in the shallow end, maybe a filter clean a few days after the party. Remember, that family of mallards nesting in the box bush is equivalent to having dozens of people in the water. I recommend ornamental birds of prey.

Finer details:
Cartridge / DE / Sand

Cartridge filters:
generally ought to be cleaned every 3 to 4 months. If your pool is more of an aesthetic piece and does not see much use or exposure, you may be able to lean on the latter.

Skip: The water may look nice, but a system that is struggling to keep up with a dirty filter is going to develop leaks and experience excessive wear.

De filters:
benefit with proper backwashing and are often cleaned to begin Pool Season and to close Pool Season, 4 to 8 months apart.

Skip: Though backwashing does remove most debris and algae “cleaning the filter,” some residues and sediments are perniciously tacky. They need to be rinsed off of the grids with moderate pressure. This is the time to inspect elements, orings, gaskets, valves, screens, and the manifold. Any cracks or tears will cause the filter to allow debris to return to the pool, through the heater, and the cleaner, and build up in corners and bottoms.

Sand filters;
are an uncommon choice, these days. They allow larger particles through than de or cartridge filters, and they are rarely cleaned, as the process is quite time consuming and potentially unpleasant. Well maintained sand filters work great, but the owner of a sand filter needs to be sure of its proper maintenance.

Skip: a broken element in a sand filter will ruin your day. Missing that one oring will cost you another day and a full filter worth of sand. If your going to take the lid off of a sand filter, you need to know what you’re doing. Fiberglass hurts for days…

Important: some applications call for a sand filter. They are usually above ground pools, specialized applications, or commercial style bodies of water. In above ground pools, they pair well with a robotic cleaner. They are very rarely the best choice for an in ground residential setting, though very popular some years ago.

Most importantly, “Who do I call?”
Most of us Pool Folk can take care of your cartridge and de filters. Some of us can clean your sand filter. We might recommend upgrading. Feel free to get several quotes and go with your gut. An expensive job can still be poorly done, and a cheap job is rarely done well. An invested pool guy is best for the job, as the better the filter, the easier his job is, and, most importantly, the happier his customers are.

“I think my pool has a leak!”

It can cause a lot of stress when the thought strikes, but before we hire leak detection, let’s consider a few things:

First, do I have an auto-fill, and is it functioning properly? If I do, is my pool guy familiar with it, or is my landscaping crew responsible for maintaining my auto-fill?
- most often, your irrigation team handles the auto-fill for the pool, as it is plumbed with irrigation parts. Though some Pool Service Technicians are able to service them, most of them are not, and the city will most likely prefer that you use a licensed irrigation technician to repair it.

Second, if I have to fill the pool manually, how often should I have to fill it?
- Topically, you should fill your pool (water-mark half way up the tile line) about once every seven days. Your swimming pool will typically lose about 1/4” of water every day to evaporation, or about 2” a week.
-If you have a vanishing edge, spill-way, or spa to pool water fall, you will lose significantly more water as the surface tension is broken. Therefore, you will need to fill the pool more often.

Next, My trough (lower pool) is losing an inch of water a day! Surely, I have a leak!
- not necessarily. If your large pool is losing 1/4” of water, but continues to spill over into the trough, all of your exposure will show in that trough and not the pool. If your pool is 10x larger than that lower reservoir, then you will see 10x the water loss because it’s all isolated to that small surface area. It is imperative to keep that trough full, though, because the integrity and efficiency of the entire system relies on it functioning properly.

Finally, is it my equipment?
-often, yes. A worn out seal or a union that has come loose over time are easily overlooked. If you see moisture around the filter or under the pump, this is where we want to start making repairs before we turn to costly services like leak detection and patching plaster. Your pool guy can often take care of such problems at no additional cost or maybe $100.

Remember, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” So, let’s keep that water crystal clear and the equipment running smooth and silent. It’s the best thing you can do to keep a leak from developing in the first place.

Spring, it seems, is flirting with us here in Arlington, TX. Some helpful tips to keep your water in pristine shape as we warm up:

Check your equipment and have your filters cleaned. Tuning the system up now will keep algae from getting a head start on your pool. An ounce of prevention, if you will.

Balance the chemistry. Adequate chlorine and the right ph will go a long way in a keeping your water brilliantly crystalline.

Make repairs. If your equipment is sucking air or whining when it runs, go ahead and fix it now, before the loss in efficiency allows your water to stagnate. If you intend to hire a professional, email them some pictures of your pool and equipment. A birds eye panorama of the equipment and plumbing may speed up the process and grease the wheels for you.

Enjoy your pool. Like Marty Robbins said, it’s just about time to enjoy that “cool, clear, water.”
