At the National September 11 Memorial, 2,983 names are cut into the bronze parapets that edge the two pools — the people killed in the 2001 attacks and in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. Those names will not change.

There is another list, and it is not finished.

On September 1, 2026, the City of New York and the FDNY released a World Trade Center 25-Year Health Impact Report. It found that more than 600 FDNY members have died of 9/11-related illness — nearly double the 343 firefighters killed on the morning of the attacks. More than 10,000 FDNY members are living today with at least one certified 9/11-related condition, and roughly 4,250 have been diagnosed with cancer, about a quarter of them with more than one.

New study: for kids with genetic risk, high air pollution meant slower lung growth by age 6. The air they breathe indoors is a lever you can control.

New research this week adds a striking wrinkle to how we think about lung health. In a long-running childhood cohort, kids genetically predisposed to COPD showed reduced lung-function growth by age six — but only those exposed to high levels of fine-particle (PM2.5) and NO₂ pollution. Lower-exposure children showed no measurable effect. The takeaway isn't fatalism about genetics; it's that the air children breathe during critical developmental windows matters — and much of that air is indoor air, in homes and classrooms. A second round of air-quality testing at Jenkins High School in Savannah found elevated Aspergillus/Penicillium spore counts (~2,530 spores/m³) in one classroom and suspected mold around locker-room HVAC — enough to relocate students while remediation begins. The district stressed no black or toxic mold was found.
