Rainy season in South Florida isn’t only hard on your weekend plans. It’s hard on your pool too 🌧️

September and October's rain waters down your chemicals and washes in debris. Here’s how to get your pool back on track after the rain:

1. Clear the debris first. Skim the surface and empty the skimmer and pump baskets. Leaves and dirt left in the water feed algae fast.

2. Check your water level. If the rain pushed it above the skimmer, lower it back to the middle of the skimmer opening. Don’t drain the pool completely, just lower the level.

3. Test and rebalance. Rain dilutes your chlorine, and because rainwater is slightly acidic it can pull down your pH and alkalinity. Test after every big storm and adjust.

4. Shock it if needed (also known as recovery). Runoff brings in contaminants your normal chlorine level can’t handle.

5. Salt pool? Check your salt. Heavy rain lowers your salt level, and many chlorinators slow down or shut off when salt runs low. Top it up to your system’s recommended range.

6. Brush and run the pump longer. Brush the walls, steps and corners, then give it extra filtration time for a day or two to clear the water.

7. Check the rest of your equipment. After lightning or flooding, make sure your pump, motor and breaker look and sound normal before you run everything like usual.

Stay on it through the end of October and your pool will come out of rainy season looking great.

Hurricane season this year in Florida has been slow, but these tips down below suit well for any thunderstorm that we're used to on a day to day basis with our Florida weather.

✔️ Lower the water level a few inches so it doesn’t overflow with heavy rain.
✔️ One thing people get wrong: don’t drain the pool or cover it with a tarp. A full pool actually helps hold the structure in place against ground shift, and tarps just become debris magnets.
✔️ Turn off and unplug your pool equipment — power surges are hard on pumps and heaters.
✔️ Clear the deck of loose furniture and toys before the wind picks up.
