🚽 What’s that capped pipe in your yard?
It’s probably your sewer line cleanout, a capped opening that lets a plumber reach your main drain line with cleaning equipment or a camera without tearing anything apart.
📍 Where to look: near your foundation outside, somewhere between the house and the street, or in the basement, crawl space, or utility area. It’s usually a short pipe with a threaded cap. Can’t find it? Have a plumber locate it before you remove any caps.
⚠️ Signs of a main line clog:
Toilet gurgles when another drain runs
Water comes up in the tub or shower when you flush
Several drains slow down at the same time
Backup at a basement floor drain
Sewage around the outdoor cleanout
🚫 Prevent it: Let cooking grease cool and put it in the trash, because it hardens in the pipes even if you wash it down with hot water. Keep wipes out of the toilet, including “flushable” ones.
🔁 Keeps coming back? A sewer camera inspection can find roots, cracks, or corrosion, so you know whether cleaning is enough or a repair is needed.
🏠 Whose pipe is it? In many places, including Arvada, the homeowner is responsible for the line from the house to the city main. Check with your sewer provider.
