Cleaning removes dirt and many germs.

Sanitizing lowers germs to a safer level — that’s the one for kitchen and break-room counters.

Disinfecting uses an EPA-registered product to kill the germs on its label — that’s the one for door handles, light switches and restrooms.

And here’s the part almost nobody knows: disinfectant only works if the surface stays wet for the time printed on the label. Spray and wipe right away, and it’s just wet.

Quick test: look up.

Vents, light fixtures, ledges, the top of the door frame. That’s high dusting — everything above normal reach — and it’s the part of a building almost nobody puts on the list.

It matters more than it looks. Dust up high doesn’t stay up high. It drifts down onto desks and counters, and once the heat starts running, it starts moving.

Most buildings handle it a few times a year rather than nightly, and the start of heating season is a great time to get it done.

Teachers, principals, school staff — conference night is coming.

It’s the one evening families see the building after a full day of students. Not the quiet, freshly cleaned school at 7:45am. The main hallway at 6pm. The restroom down the hall from the classroom. The chairs where they wait their turn.

Does your building get dustier once the heat comes on? There’s a reason.

Dust doesn’t stay where it lands. Every footstep, every door, every time the heat cycles on, settled dust lifts back into the air and comes down again on desks and counters.

Cleaning is how it leaves the building instead of going in circles — and how it’s done matters more than how often. Microfiber traps dust; a dry rag mostly moves it. Vacuum filtration matters. And the high spots nobody looks at — vents, light fixtures, the tops of cabinets — are where a summer’s worth of it is sitting right now.

(Vents and filters inside the system are a job for your HVAC tech. Good to know where that line is.)
