Red and confused flour beetles are one of the most common stored product pests. Physically and behaviorally, they are practically the same. The main difference between them is that adult red flour beetles fly (although not strongly) and adult confused flour beetles do not. Adults are up to ¼ inch long with flattened bodies that help them hide in tight crevices. They can also live from one to three years, are very active and cause feeding damage along with the larvae.
Red and confused flour beetles infest a wide variety of stored products, particularly those containing processed meal or flour. They are not able to infest whole seeds unless the seeds have already been broken open. Infestations often originate from birdseed, dry pet foods, baking ingredients, pasta, and spices, usually in the oldest, most difficult to reach packages.

The most important management step is to find and remove infested products. Adults may also hide around infested products in cracks and crevices, which can be treated with an appropriately labeled insecticide.

Moth flies are fuzzy little flies with wing veins that run parallel from base to tip. In nature, they breed in moist, polluted environments that sometimes flood, where their larvae feed on decaying organic material. In and around structures, moth flies are common in plumbing drains and sewage systems. Because moth flies develop in decaying organic material, they may carry pathogens in healthcare facilities or to food handling areas. They may also cause allergic asthma in sensitive people.
Moth flies are one of the most common flies found in floor drains. Since the adults are poor fliers and are active at night, they are usually found resting during the day near the source of an infestation. They will breed in anything that collects moist organic material and are often found under leaking shower pans, in basement or crawlspace sump pits and in elevator pits. Structural or pipe leaks may also cause moth fly infestations.

The best way to manage moth flies is to remove or treat their breeding sites.

Black Widow Spiders are one of the two groups of medically important spiders in the United States. Three species of black widow spiders are native to the U.S., but only two are common around structures – the southern and western black widow spiders. Adult females of both species have shiny black bodies and globular abdomens with a red hourglass marking underneath, except the western black widow has an additional red spot above the tip of the abdomen.
Only black widow females can cause an envenomating bite to humans. They are usually brushed up against in their webs built-in quiet, protected places often low to the ground. Their venom contains a neurotoxin that causes constant muscle contraction, which can produce severe pain that lasts for several days. Black widow spider bites do not develop necrotic lesions and are rarely fatal.

Heavy black widow spider populations are usually a result of poor storage practices, both indoors and outdoors. They are also common in crawlspaces. Wearing thick gloves while moving items around can help reduce the risk of a spider bite.
