Snow vs Screen Enclosures can equal collapse

Back in December 2004 brazoria county received several inches of show (approx 12”) if memory serves me right. As a result hundreds of screen enclosures collapsed from the weight of snow!!! They are not designed for this weight.

Hence the screen enclosures collapsed causing a lot of damage that most insurance companies did not cover.

After talking to many screen enclosures companies at the time and since then. The best thing you can do if we get a bunch of snow over the next two days and you’re worried about your enclosures collapsing… is to cut the roof screen material. Either every other panel or every panel depending on the amount of snow your area received.

It’s a lot cheaper to replace a half dozen of screens to the enclosure roof sections. Then it is to replace a $30 to $50k enclosure as a whole!

You can easily cut your roof screen panels bye duct taping a razor blade knife to your pool extension pole. Please use caution when attempting to do so.

Not suggesting at all this is something you must do. Several screen enclosures made it through the snow ok. Just passing some information along Incase you find yourself in this type of situation and unsure as what to do.

This is just some helpful advice I was given several years back by a screen enclosure company after the snow of 2004 and thought I would pass it along.

Good luck, be safe and stay warm.

We are expecting temperatures in/ or near freezing temperature range.

It is recommended as well as industry standard practice to run your filter pumps and water feature pumps during the period of freezing temperatures!

If you are unable to run your pumps or loose power than it is recommended to shut the power off to your equipment at the breaker, drain your equipment (i.e pump pots, filters, etc) cover the pipes and equipment. Do not run pumps after loosing power without first checking to see if the water inside your pumps or filters have frozen. This is a leading cause of broken pipes and equipment once regaining power. It’s better to shut the equipment off at the breakers if you loose power during the freeze.

Once the temperature drops below 38 degrees make sure you run the pumps non-stop until temperatures come back up!

Thank you,

🌨️Protect Your Pipes🌨️

As temperatures are expected to drop to freezing or below early next week, it's important to prepare your home to prevent frozen pipes and costly damages:

• Insulate Pipes: Wrap exposed pipes to keep them warm.
• Seal Leaks: Check for drafts near your pipes and seal them to keep the cold air out.
• Keep the Heat On: Maintain a consistent temperature in your home, even when you're not there.
• Let Faucets Drip: A trickle of water can prevent pipes from freezing.
• Know Your Shut-Off Valve: Make sure you know how to quickly turn off your water in case a pipe does burst.

Don't be caught off-guard by the freeze—take action now to protect your pipes!
