Its termite season here some help with identifying termite damage apposed to dry rot.

Termite Damage vs. Dry Rot it helps to know the difference.

Our homes are our havens, our refuge, and many times, our greatest investment. With warm weather here to stay, more homeowners are spending time outside beautifying their property and seeing where their homes could benefit from a little TLC. It’s always important to spot small issues and take care of them before they turn into major problems. Looking around the foundation of your home, inspecting any area where a vertical surface meets a horizontal surface might show you one insidious issue.

Dry rot and termites damage the wood on a home in substantial ways that, if left untreated, could cause structural damage that can cost thousands of dollars. The EPA estimates that structural damage repairs in the U.S. are in excess of $5 billion a year. The issue is figuring out which of the two is causing the problem.

Termite Damage vs. Dry Rot

If you spot cracks or fissures in areas where wood touches the ground, where a deck attaches to the home, or on wooden windowsills, you may have dry rot. If the wood in these same places looks wavy or has areas that appear to be hollowed out – or you see branch-like formations made from mud running up your foundation, called mud tubes, you may have termites.

Dry rot is caused by a certain fungus, whose spores land on wood. If there is enough moisture for the fungus to thrive, it feeds on the wood and weakens it. Even though the name implies the rotting wood is dry, it’s quite the opposite – dry rot needs a water source or moisture to survive. You may see white or grey growth on the wood, and even a mushroom-like body, if it has advanced. The wood may be blistering, cracking, or the paint may be peeling. You may even see green algae on the wood.

Since this fungus creates channels in wood, it is easy to mistake the damage for termite damage. Termites create channels in wood as well, but the main difference is that the fundamental integrity of the wood stays intact around the termite channels, unless of course the termite exposure is excessive. Also, the presence of moisture damage is not necessary. When the wood gives way, it is because the termites have eaten through so much of the wood that there isn’t enough left to support weight.

(Bed Bug Facts)

Bed bugs feed on blood

They emerge from hiding places at night to seek their meal.

As a survival instinct, bed bugs are elusive. They know to stay out of view during the daytime, hiding in mattress crevices, box springs, baseboards, behind electrical switchplates, in picture frames, and even behind wallpaper. But at night time, the carbon dioxide we exhale often tempts them out of their hiding spots.

Bed bugs can exist for extended periods of time without food. Adults can survive up to one year without feeding.

Females can lay up to 200 eggs in their lifetime at rates of up to five per day when food is abundant.

Eggs are attached to surfaces in cracks and crevices with “cement” produced by the females.

Bed bugs are usually found within 4-8 feet of food source and generally are more horizontally mobile than vertically so they will look for hiding places at same level as food source.

Bed bugs are transported in furniture, luggage, boxes, suitcases and packed clothing.

Myths & Facts

Bed bugs only bite in the dark.
False.

Although bed bugs tend to be more active at night, they can bite at any time.
Only dirty, cluttered homes get bed bugs.

False.

Anyone can get bed bugs. Bed bugs have been found in the homes of the wealthy and poor. Unsanitary conditions will not cause bed bugs but getting rid of clutter will help to reduce the number of places bed bugs can live and hide.
Bed bugs cannot be seen with the naked eye.

False.

Bed bugs are small but can be seen with the naked eye. A magnifying glass will help. Young bed bugs are about the size of a poppy seed and mature ones are about the size of an apple seed.
If I see bite marks I have bed bugs.

False.

Other insect bites may resemble that of bed bugs. Presence of live bed bugs or their eggs will confirm their infestation in an area.
If you have bed bugs you need to get rid of infested clothing and furniture.

False.

Clothing can be laundered to get rid of bed bugs. In most cases furniture can be treated and should only be discarded if there are no acceptable treatments that can rid them of bed bugs.
Bed bugs are not known to cause or spread diseases.

True.

Bed bugs have not been shown to cause or spread diseases. Some people will react to bed bugs bites and excessive scratching can lead to secondary infections.
Bed bugs cannot fly and will not jump from the floor to the bed.

True.

Bed bugs have no wings and cannot fly, jump or hop.
Bed bugs are only found on the bed.

False.

Although they are called bed bugs they are not only confined to the bed. Bed bugs are commonly found in beds, on sofas, in chairs and areas near where people sleep or lounge.
Some people are not affected by bed bugs.

True.

Some people do not have a reaction to bed bug bites and may be unaware that bed bugs are in their home until they actually see them.
Bed bugs can live for many months without feeding.

True.

Bed bugs can live for many months without feeding.
A bed bug inspection needs scent detecting dogs to really tell where bed bugs are.

False.

Bed bug scent dogs can be helpful, but are rarely necessary. Some bed bug scent dogs can signal the presence of a bed bug even when there is none, and may even miss some, with results varying according to the training the dog receives, the experience of the handler, and other factors.
Encasing a mattress and box spring will prevent future bed bug infestations in your home.

False.

Encasements will help prevent a mattress or box spring from becoming infested or being a reservoir for bed bugs, but bed bugs can still find their way onto a bed to bite. And if bed bugs cannot live in a mattress or box springs, they will live somewhere else. Encasements are a good tool, but are not sufficient to prevent or treat an infestation.
Products can claim to be effective for bed bugs without proof.

True.

Pesticides registered with the Environmental Protection Agency do have to have data to back their claims. But products without pesticides, or with pesticides that are exempt from registration requirements may make exaggerated claims without proof. Use common sense. If it sounds like a miracle product, it probably isn’t.
Insect foggers provide very little control of bed bugs and may even cause the bed bug population to disperse, making control more difficult.

True.

Insect foggers do not effectively control bed bugs. Insect foggers are dangerous in that they can leave unwanted residue throughout the treated area. Most insect foggers contain a flammable propellant and some have been associated with a number of fires.

"Heat vs Chemicals"
Deciding on an effective bed bug treatment is important and needs to be done right the first time. Bed bugs are proven to be an incredibly difficult pest to kill; they are good at hiding in cracks and crevices and are becoming more and more resistant to EPA approved pesticides. Heat is an effective way to kill bed bugs because it penetrates into cracks and crevices that other methods do not.

CHEMICALS ARE SPOT TREATMENTS - The problem with chemical treatments starts with the fact that they primarily work as spot treatments. Research studies at the University of Kentucky indicated that bed bugs have developed an increased resistance to current pesticides. This means that unless a bed bug is contacted directly with an approved pesticide it may not kill the bug at all. Only 6% of chemical treatments are effective in one treatment. Most chemical treatments take 3 or more applications to be effective.

HEALTH RISKS - Bed bugs got their name because of the places they are commonly found—our beds. This poses another problem to using chemicals. Applying large amounts of pesticides to the areas in which you and your family sleep can be toxic. Health threats posed to people and pets from pesticide sensitivity include: skin and eye irritation, nerve damage, disruption of the endocrine system and even cancers.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS - Environmental hazards are another concern related to chemical treatments. DDT was an approved chemical for bed bug treatments until it was banned in 1972 due to its environmental risks. Sprayed pesticides often end up in the air, soil, or water, where they pose threats to the ecosystem and cause adverse health and reproductive effects to many animals in the food chain.

Keeping Them Out Forever: What You Should Do

Once you have eradicated the bugs, you need to do everything that you can to make sure that they never come back. A second infestation can be the most frustrating thing in the world. You will feel like your victory over the bugs has been taken away from you.

There are a number of things that you need to do both inside and outside of your home in order to make sure that they do not get in again. If you are vigilant and take all of the necessary steps, you will only have to fight off the bugs a single time.

Inside, you should make sure that you vacuum every day, both to pick up any bugs that may have gotten in and to get rid of the dirt that they like to use as a hiding place. After vacuuming, you need to block off all of the different ways that they could get in.

This can mean putting screens on windows, caulking cracks, and tightening boards so that there is no space between them. You may even have to apply a new layer of glue to wallpaper where it has come loose. If the bugs cannot get in, you will not have to kill them.

Proper Storage

You should also store all of your linens in a place where the bugs cannot reach. You should use airtight boxes. You need to make sure that the rooms that these boxes are in have been protected as mentioned above – using caulk, screens, and the like.
