It’s almost time for the football playoffs, and that’s always exciting. But if your team is headed to the Dome, be aware your trip can be quickly ruined by itchy welts and emotional distress caused by bedbugs. This is the time of year when these pests are more prevalent, so don’t let them hitch a ride on your clothes or luggage! You’re there to scream for your team, not in misery because of big, red itchy welts.

You may have noticed the signs of fire ants still around. If you’re thinking the cold weather will kill them off, you’re wrong. These painful pests will simply bore deeper into the ground to avoid the cold, only to show back up in the spring, hungry and angry. It’s best to take action to get rid of them now, while you can still see them.

You’d think the colder weather we’ve been having would get rid of the mosquitoes, but that’s not the case in Louisiana. If you’ve had the chance to be outside enjoying the warm sunshine and cool breezes, you’ve probably noticed those pests are continuing to hang around. With the holidays coming up fast, if you can take some time now to kick back for a short while, relax outside and snack on something, you sure don’t want to have something outside snacking on you.

Ladybugs. They’re out looking for a warm place to spend the winter and they’re attracted to bright colored houses or those with lots of bright lighting, such as the beautiful Christmas lights you just put up. Be aware that seeing just a few on your windowsill can quickly turn into hundreds all around your house.

Daylight Savings Time is passed us and that means it gets dark earlier than before, and some folks are even starting to put up Christmas lights. Keep in mind that mating season has also begun for crickets, and they’re out and about in abundance, looking for bright lights and romance. Your beautiful holiday lighting may impress your friends and neighbors, but big holes in your clothes, drapes, upholstery, even your screens will not. A little prevention can keep you from having to spend that hard-earned Christmas bonus on repairs.

Today is Fancy Rat and Mouse Day! Yes, apparently there’s a special day for those scurrying little pests. What makes a rat more than just a rat? Is it clothes, hairdo, pedicure, ribbons, hat, what? Shakespeare once penned, “A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet.” Is it the same way with rats? If you called it fancy, would that somehow make it more appealing? Of course, you gotta admit, Mickey and Minnie are pretty snappy dressers and as lovable as can be. Anyway, hope you've had a Happy Fancy Rat and Mouse Day.

Can you believe that it’s November? That means the joys of Thanksgiving, and…the irritation of bugs! Boxelder bugs are a nuisance to watch for in the Fall. Through the summer, these black and orange insects live on the sides of trees, feeding on the leaves, seeds and flowers. As the weather gets colder, they swarm and will try to come into your house, where it’s warm. These pests don’t bite humans, but they’re a real nuisance and can leave stains on your rugs, draperies and furniture.

If you’re planning to bring the pumpkins you set out for Halloween inside for use as Thanksgiving decorations, better check them out first. If they’ve been carved or have split in any way, you need to remember flies and gnats are attracted to the meat of pumpkins and gourds, especially if they’re aging. Bringing them into the house might also open the door for annoying pests. You have enough going on preparing for a big holiday meal.

Halloween may be over, but it’s wise to watch for those little “ghost lizards” still lurking around your house. They can “play dead” if trapped, but they’ll bite if you pick them up with your bare hands So don’t put them close to your neck. You never know.

Aren't squirrels kind of cute? Cute that is, until they become a nuisance by creating safety hazards in and around your house through gnawing on wires and siding, damaging gardens and plants, even getting into your attic and destroying the insulation. And if that’s not enough, squirrels also carry fleas, and when they hang around your house, it’s real easy for your pets to give the itchy pests a piggy back ride into your house. So it’s good to be aware of the issues that come with having squirrels. Are they precious or problem? You decide.

Did you know that October is Bat Appreciation Month? Makes sense, with Halloween, but although books and movies have given bats a bad rep, there’s actually a lot to appreciate about the little flying critters. They’re not some sort of vampire that preys on people. Bats have extra sharp night vision and eat mosquitoes and other pesty flying insects that swarm around your house at night, making them a great natural mosquito repellent.

If you have pecan trees, chances are you’ve already got big white webs forming on the limbs. They’re created by what some call web worms, but these pests are actually the larva of a small white moth. They’re not harmful to humans or animals, but they can drastically affect the yield of pecans.
