Did not close the pool this past fall. Operated pump on the coldest days and nights through winter. Biggest challenge was keeping leaves out of pool but only required 2 hours a week. Started SLAM process 3 days ago then balanced PH and TA. Summer ready just put it on cruise control and wait for water to warm.

Hope your pool survived all the rain, mine is still on cruise control. I let the water level drift down the week before in anticipation of the rain and so far I've had to waste only about 1.5 inches of the 4 I got.

Well its the last day of July and my last post was the last day of April when I started the pool for this year, so just a little run down of what my pool care included in May and June when we had lots of rain and then here came July, the hottest one I can remember in a while. With the two rainy months I had to shock 2 different times due to dirt washed into the pool, a total of 9 inches in those 2 heavy rain periods, which included vacuuming lots to waste to clean the pool back to pristine condition. So in 2 months I vacuumed about once a week and used approximately 30 gallons of 8.25% BLEACH at a cost of $2.50 per gallon. I did have to raise my CYA level a couple times also at a cost of $20.00 due to lots of water replacement from the vac process. Then July hit and we all know how hot it was! Pool was on cruise control and by the 25th of July the water temp had climbed to 96 degrees and we were replacing about a half inch a day in water due to evaporation so we let water level drop to the lowest possible level without dry running pump and added 4 inches of makeup water, temp is down to 87 and pool is perfect today after vacuuming for only the 2nd time of the month. During July I used about 16 gallons of BLEACH at a cost of $2.50 per gallon. In the 3 month period I never had an algae bloom requiring me to shock, only the 2 occasions of the floods in May and June that were dirt related using a total of 46 gallons of BLEACH @ $2.50 a gallon spending $127.50 including taxes and $20 bucks for CYA (stabilizer) for a total of $147.50 for the 3 months this season so far! I'm happy at $49.00 per month and 2 hours total time every week.

If you want to save some money on your pool care I highly recommend you learn how using the simplest method possible.

So I finally pulled the cover off on Thursday the 28th and it was about like I expected due to the unusually warm winter and early spring. After the cover was off here are the things I did in order to get up and running;
Bring the water level up to above normal (I got 3 inches of rain to help me).
Make all connections at the pump, open all valves and remove any plugs that were installed in the skimmers and return jets.
Start the pump and let run 24-36 hours while monitoring for any leaks.
At this point if you can clearly see the bottom you can skip the next step and start SLAMMING (explained later).
I couldn't see the bottom of mine clearly so I vacuumed all the debris I could using the waste setting on my sand filter.
After vacuuming to waste you will have to replace the wasted water and then start the pump in filter mode. While waiting for the water level to return to normal you can grab your debris net and start scooping all you can get.
Once pump is back up and running you can start the SLAM process. This is the process of adding enough chlorine to bring you up to shock level which in my case was 12. I use 8.25% bleach for my chlorine and it took 3 gallons. You want to test the water about 4 times in the next 24 hours trying to add enough chlorine to maintain shock level. At the end of the 24 hour period if you are losing chlorine that means you are not clean enough, you need to continue the slam process and vacuum the debris once a day until you lose no more than 1 ppm chlorine from sunset to sunrise. Once you achieve this the chlorine level will settle to normal swim levels in a couple of days. I'm on day 3 since uncovering and pretty sure by Wednesday I will have crystal clear water all thanks to TroubleFreePool.

Last year I uncovered and prepped my pool for opening on the 24th of April. It looks like I may be able to hit that date again. Will it look as bad as last years opening picture?

I don't know about you all but my pool was on cruise control all summer this year, I had 0 algae blooms and it's been almost 5 months since opening. I don't know what your expense in chemicals were but mine has been $285.00 for those 5 months, if you've spent much more than that then you need talk to me!

All work and no play for me. Lets see, if it gets daylight at around 5:30 am and dark around 9:00 pm, that is 15.5 hours of light and I work 14 of those. How do I keep the pool looking good? 15 minutes in the morning before I leave and 5 minutes in the evening, doesn't take much if you test your water daily with the TF test kit from troublefreepool.com using the Pool Calculator and only what is necessary that costs about $10.00 per week and can be bought at the local dollar store.
