Mosquitoes, like all insects, are cold-blooded creatures. As a result, they are incapable of regulating body heat and their temperature is essentially the same as their surroundings. Mosquitoes function best at 80 degrees F, become lethargic at 60 degrees F, and cannot function below 50 degrees F.

Anopheles Species
The Anopheles species of mosquito can be a quite nasty one that is known for carrying malaria. While malaria is not much cause for concern in today’s modern world, it is still something you should be aware of. The Anopheles species will take any blood meal it can get, human or animal. These Georgia mosquitos stay active during dusk and dawn. These mosquitos need areas of moisture in order to effectively breed and live. Any areas of water collection need to be regularly removed and maintained in order to really eradicate these mosquitos.

Here’s todays fact about one of the species of mosquitoes that we have in Georgia. We will post one daily.

The Aedes Species
The Aedes species is one of the most prevalent Georgia mosquitos in the state! The Aedes mosquito is a very active mosquito throughout most of the day. The most common mosquito that falls under this specie is the Asian Tiger Mosquito. This mosquito is one you need to know about, for they are very attracted to humans and other mammals. Not only that, but they are also known to be carriers of most deadly diseases. The common diseases this species carries are the dengue fever, chikungunya fever, yellow fever virus and the zika virus! The Aedes Mosquito prefer areas with heavy brush and forest. This invasive mosquito can be found all around the world and breed very rapidly.

Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Human EEEV cases occur relatively infrequently, largely because the primary transmission cycle takes place in and around swampy areas where human populations tend to be limited. All residents of and visitors to areas where EEEV activity has been identified are at risk of infection. People who engage in outdoor work and recreational activities in endemic areas are at increased risk of infection. Persons over age 50 and under age 15 seem to be at greatest risk for developing severe disease when infected with EEEV. Overall, only about 4-5% of human EEEV infections result in EEE. EEEV infection is thought to confer life-long immunity against re-infection. It does not confer significant cross-immunity against other alphaviruses (e.g., western equine encephalitis virus), and it confers no cross-immunity against flaviviruses (e.g., West Nile virus) or bunyaviruses (e.g., La Crosse virus).

In the United States, an average of 11 human cases of EEE are reported annually. To ensure standardization of reporting across the country, CDC recommends that the national surveillance case definition be consistently applied by all state health departments.

From 2011-2020, most cases of EEE have been reported Massachusetts, Michigan, Florida, Georgia, New York, and North Carolina. EEEV transmission is most common in and around freshwater hardwood swamps in the Atlantic and Gulf Coast states and the Great Lakes region.
