"..mothers who exclusively breastfed in the first months postpartum had lower odds of elevated postpartum depression symptoms, while breastfeeding intentions did not significantly modify this relationship." This makes sense from my PhD studies- the release of oxytocin with each breastfeeding episode benefits maternal mental health, and is released with breastfeeding for the baby too. (See Maternal plasma levels of oxytocin during breastfeeding-A systematic review (2020). PLoS One 15(8): e0235806. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0235806 ) Also "... a substantial proportion of mothers [in this study] did not meet their exclusive breastfeeding intentions, emphasizing the importance of supporting mothers in achieving their feeding goals to promote maternal mental health."
Breastfeeding can be so difficult in the early weeks and IMHO is not helped by birth interventions and hospital postpartum routines. Skin-to-skin contact is another powerful way to release oxytocin for both mother and baby and may help to fill 'hormonal gaps' with formula feeding. Much ๐ to all mamas feeding their babies in all ways.
