🦟 Florida’s dengue outbreak has nearly doubled in the month since three counties declared states of emergency, with statewide cases climbing from 392 to 721 according to CDC data.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, remains the center of the outbreak, with cases there rising from 177 to 352. New infections have also been reported in Orange, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

A University of Florida biostatistician and infectious disease modeler said the continued spread was a matter of time, pointing to climate change increasing mosquito populations and lengthening their active seasons. He emphasized the importance of public campaigns to eliminate breeding sites, noting mosquitoes reproduce in small pools of standing water including tires and plastic containers. Cooler, drier weather could slow transmission, but he cautioned any relief may be temporary. If temperatures and rainfall climb again, he said, the outbreak will return.

October in South Florida is still mosquito season, and this surprises a lot of residents who moved here from northern states. In the northeast and midwest, October means the end of biting insects. In Broward and Palm Beach Counties, October daytime temperatures average 83 to 85°F and afternoon rain events continue. Aedes aegypti populations remain fully active. Culex quinquefasciatus is still breeding in standing water throughout the canal system. Anopheles mosquitoes, the malaria vector, are present in South Florida, particularly in the Everglades adjacent communities of Parkland, Southwest Ranches, and western Broward County. Locally transmitted malaria cases are rare but have been documented in the southeastern US in recent years. Florida Department of Health has issued advisories for specific counties. Anopheles species are night biters and breed in slow-moving or stagnant freshwater, canals, drainage ditches, and marsh edges. Dengue fever in South Florida remains a public health concern worth monitoring. Locally acquired cases, not travel-related, have been documented in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties in multiple recent years. The vector is Aedes aegypti: small, black with white lyre-shaped markings on the thorax, bites during the day, and breeds in container water as small as a bottle cap. Symptoms include sudden high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, and rash.
