I’ll tell you something folks. Wood restoration is a labor of love. It absolutely has to be in order to put up with the hair pulling, stress and anxiety before, during and after staining a project.
Here’s just a few conditions that must be met:
✅ Wood has to be squeaky clean, conditioned, and sanded.
✅ Blown off and wiped down.
✅ Moisture content below 13%. (That’s very dry inside and out)
✅ Cannot begin staining until the dew is dried from the night before. This cuts tons of time out of your work day. Absolutely no lawn irrigation.
✅ No rain predicted 12-24hrs before, during and after staining.
✅ Can’t use sprayers if it’s too windy (ever tried to use ultra thin 3M masking plastic on a windy day?)
✅ Cant have falling leaves, acorns, or pollen.
✅ Can’t have anyone around (landscapers)
✅ Time! You need tons of it.
Just remember, quality work takes time. You cannot risk a substandard job for the sake of time. Some do. I most certainly do not.
I would prefer disappointing a client by telling them the time isn’t right, rather than getting a call telling me the coating is bubbling or peeling 2 months later.
