I ceramic coated this 2021 Bentley Flying Spur 5 years ago when it was brand new. The ceramic held up great during that time, but was do for a fresh coating. The reason why is something that detailers never talk about or even know about.
Have you ever gotten something on your car repainted before, and the body shop told you not to apply any sealants for a certain amount of time, usually 30-90 days? That’s because during that time, the solvents from the paint are off-gassing, and need to be allowed to breathe. If you were to seal the paint with any form of sealant before the fresh paint off gassed, you would be left with serious clarity issues, and potential bubbles in the paint from the gasses building up underneath the sealant.
While this Bentley hasn’t been repainted, the same principal applies to any and all paint regardless of the age. Paint never stops off-gassing, even if only a little bit years down the line. What happens with ceramic coatings as they age, is they can become hazy looking, and this haziness is the build up of gas under the ceramic coating itself. It’s nothing to fret about as it isn’t enough to damage the paint, and is completely normal to the process, it’s just something that happens with age.
All that’s required to rectify this is to polish down the old coating when it has run its course to allow the paint to breathe, and then reapply your ceramic coating so it looks fresh and brand new again.
This is why I won’t offer multi-layer ceramic coating systems like Ceramic Pro anymore that will put up to 5 layers of ceramic on the paint. When you put that much rigid material on the paint, it not only can’t breathe, but it can’t expand and contract with the change in temperature properly. And even if the ceramic can last 7-8 years, or whatever the guarantee is, the ceramic coating will look awful by that point, so the maximum length of time I will offer is 5 years.
Ceramic coatings are some of the best forms of protection out there, they just need some maintenance like anything else.
Anyways, I thought this was a fun bit of knowledge I’d share with you all since it’s not something anyone really talks about. The more you know!
