If you’ve got those green fuzzies (moss or algae) popping up on your roof, that usually means it’s been a little too long since the last cleaning. Here’s the deal:
💧 1. Your shingles start losing those little granules
Those granules are what protect your roof from the sun. When moss or algae stay wet on top of them, they loosen up and fall off. Once that happens, your roof wears out faster.
🌿 2. Moss can actually lift the shingles
A lot of people think moss just sits there, but it actually grows underneath the shingles. When it gets wet, it swells and pushes them up — which lets even more water get underneath.
⚠️ 3. Moisture sneaks in and causes bigger problems
If water gets under the shingles, the plywood can start to rot. Nails rust. Pieces loosen up. Before long you’ve got a real headache (and an expensive one).
🦠 4. It invites even more junk to grow
Once part of your roof stays damp, the moss, algae, mildew — all of it — just spreads. It speeds up the damage pretty quick.
🥵 5. Your home gets hotter
When your shingles lose their granules, the sun heats the roof a lot faster. That heat ends up in your attic, which means higher cooling bills.
Bottom line:
A shingle roof needs to stay clean and dry. Anything that holds moisture — leaves, pine needles, pollen, moss — is rough on it.
If your roof’s looking a little green or fuzzy, reach out. It’s a whole lot easier to get it cleaned now than to deal with replacing it later.
