Why the serious look?!?
Inside this box are some of the most deadly creature known to mankind. I’m holding a box full of them before sending them out for testing!
Yep, I’m sending my mosquito trap captures off to Boise, state dept of health, to be tested for vector diseases.
Weekly, I set up 6+ traps for a 24 hour period around my treatment areas in Fish Haven. I use the information from my mosquito surveillance program to help me know where my hot spots are and where I need to do more larvacide treatments as well as ULV fogging from my truck.

Stay safe everyone and I’ll keep working hard to protect us from the diseases mosquitoes can carry.

I want to thank Murdock Chevrolet in Logan, Utah for getting my mosquito truck in and out in less than 24 hours when my front wheel bearing went out. My service writer Doug went above and beyond my expectations.
Thank you

Public Health Officials Confirm Positive Mosquito Pool in Bear Lake County
Southeastern Idaho Public Health (SIPH) officials have confirmed the first West Nile Virus (WNV) positive mosquito pool in Health District 6. It was located in Bear Lake County. The first positive mosquito pool in District 6 and the first ever in Bear Lake County was located on the south end of the county close to the Utah Idaho border on the west side of the lake.
West Nile is a potentially serious illness that is usually spread to animals and humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people infected with West Nile do not show symptoms, more severe illness may occur. People with symptoms may experience fever, headaches, body aches, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, eye pain, and sometimes swollen lymph glands or a skin rash typically occurring 2 to 14 days after the bite of an infected mosquito. More severe infections may involve the central nervous system.
To reduce the risk for WNV, the following precautions should be taken:
•When outdoors, use insect repellent containing an EPA-registered active ingredient, such as DEET or Picaridin (apply it according to manufacturers’ instructions.) In addition, certain products which contain permethrin are recommended for use on clothing, shoes, bed nets, and camping gear. Follow the directions on the package.
•Use insect repellent and wear long sleeves, pants, and loose-fitting clothing at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active and feeding. If possible, consider staying indoors during these hours.
•Make sure to have good screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out.
•Get rid of mosquito breeding sites by draining standing water from flowerpots, buckets, and barrels. Change the water in pet dishes and replace the water in bird baths and feeding troughs, at least twice a week. Drill holes in tire swings or old tires so water drains out. Keep children's wading pools empty or on their sides when not in use.
•Don’t over-irrigate your lawns, gardens, or pastures.
For more information on WNV visit SIPH’s website at www.siphidaho.org or http://westnile.idaho.gov.

Mosquito traps

Setting out 2 of my 6 weekly mosquito traps in Fish Haven.
I put dry ice in the red cooler with a small vent hose out the bottom to emit C02 through the evening, night, & morning. This attracts adult mosquitoes to the trap where a light draws them closer and a fan sucks them into the trap. The trap is powered by batteries. After 24 hours I go back and gather the traps.
Once caught I freeze them to kill and help preserve them.
Then I separate them by species, count them and send the culex mosquitoes up to Boise to test for West Nile and other vector borne diseases.
This is one of the several methods of surveillance I use to help me know how, when, & where I need to concentrate in order to better protect Fish Haven.
It’s a cool process.
