The P**p Scoop this week is all about GARBAGE DISPOSALS…….you will want to read this if you have a septic system AND a garbage disposal!!
Garbage disposals can negatively impact septic systems by overloading them with solids, leading to sludge buildup, reduced tank capacity, and potential drainfield clogs, requiring more frequent and costly pumping.
While garbage disposals can be a convenience, consider alternatives like composting OR scraping all food waste in the garbage before washing.
Garbage disposals are not equipped to handle:
fruit pits and peels
stringy or tough-skinned vegetables, especially celery and corn husks
eggshells
pasta, rice, and oats (they expand in water and can clog your pipes)
onion skins
nuts
bones
coffee grounds
potting soil
fats, oils, and grease
Remember: Even if these items pass through your garbage disposal, they will not break down inside your septic tank. Instead, they will accumulate until a pumper removes them
We recommend that you avoid using a garbage disposal with a septic system.
