🔨 Throwback Thursday: The T-Lock Shingle

Before architectural shingles became the standard, one of the most recognizable roofs in North Dakota was the T-lock shingle.

Introduced in the early 1990s, T-lock shingles became popular because of their unique interlocking design and ability to stand up to the tough weather conditions of the Northern Plains. If you've lived in the Bismarck-Mandan area for decades, you've probably seen these distinctive roofs throughout older neighborhoods.

Production of asphalt T-lock shingles largely ended in the early 2000s, making them increasingly difficult to match and repair. That's why homeowners with existing T-lock roofs often face challenges when storm damage occurs—replacement materials simply aren't manufactured anymore.

🔨 Tip Tuesday 🔨

Last week we talked about the importance of drip edge and gutter apron — and the critical role they play in protecting the edge of your roof system.

Here’s a real-world example from a roof inspection we recently completed.

The homeowner was experiencing damage and rot in their soffit. After inspecting the roof edge, we discovered the gutters had been installed under the drip edge, and there was no gutter apron installed at all.

Over time, this allowed water to run back behind the gutter instead of flowing properly into it. That moisture slowly seeped into the soffit and fascia, eventually causing rot and deterioration.

💧 Proper roof edge installation matters.
A correctly installed gutter apron helps direct water into the gutter system where it belongs — protecting your soffit, fascia, roof decking, and even your foundation from long-term water damage.

It’s small details like these that make a big difference in the performance and lifespan of your roofing system.

If you’ve noticed peeling paint, soft soffit areas, staining, or signs of moisture around your roof edge, it may be time for an inspection.
