🍁 Is your septic system ready for colder weather?

Fall is a great time to give your septic system a little attention before Vermont winter arrives.

Here’s a simple fall checklist:

✅ Fix leaks.
Even small leaks can send unnecessary water into your septic system.

✅ Watch your water use.
Spread out laundry, showers and other high-water-use activities when possible.

✅ Keep the drainfield clear.
Avoid vehicles, heavy equipment and anything else that can compact the soil or interfere with the area.

✅ Direct gutters away.
Keep roof runoff and excess water away from your septic system and drainfield.

✅ Know when your tank was last pumped.
If you can't remember, it may be time to check your maintenance records and talk with a septic professional.

A little fall prep can help prevent a winter problem.

🚽 “Flushable” doesn’t necessarily mean septic-safe.

Wipes may disappear when you flush—but that doesn’t mean they break down the way toilet paper does.

Unlike toilet paper, wipes are designed to stay strong when wet. That means they can remain intact much longer after they're flushed, potentially contributing to clogs and problems in your septic system.

The simple rule?

If it isn’t toilet paper, think before you flush it.

Even when the package says “flushable,” the safer choice for your septic system is:

🗑️ Trash it. Don’t flush it.

During SepticSmart Week, take a minute to remind everyone in the household that the toilet isn't a trash can. Small habits can help prevent some very unpleasant—and potentially expensive—problems later.

🍂 Your drainfield may look like an ordinary part of your yard—but it has an important job to do.

A healthy drainfield allows wastewater from your septic system to be naturally treated as it moves through the soil. Protecting that area helps protect the entire system.

A few simple habits can make a difference:

💧 Direct water away.
Keep gutters, downspouts and other drainage from sending excess water toward your drainfield. Saturated soil can interfere with its ability to properly treat wastewater.

🌳 Watch those roots.
Avoid planting trees and other deep-rooted plants on or too close to the drainfield. Roots can grow toward septic pipes and potentially cause damage.

🌱 Let the soil do its job.
Keep the drainfield covered with grass or other shallow-rooted vegetation, and avoid unnecessary disturbance to the area.

Your drainfield works quietly underground every day. Give it the conditions it needs to keep doing its job.

Healthy drainfield. Healthy system.

⚠️ Your septic system may be trying to tell you something.

Septic problems don't always happen without warning. Knowing what to watch for can help you recognize a potential problem before it becomes a bigger one.

Keep an eye—and an ear and nose—out for:

• Slow drains throughout the house
• Gurgling sounds from plumbing or drains
• Sewage odors indoors or outside
• Wet or unusually soggy areas around your septic system or drainfield

One symptom doesn't necessarily tell you exactly what's wrong, but these are signs worth paying attention to.

If something doesn't look, sound or smell right, don't wait for a backup to find out why.

Don't ignore the signs. Give Uncle Bob's a call!

🍂 Why is fall such a good time to take care of your septic system?

Because a little attention now can help you head into a Vermont winter with fewer surprises.

The ground is still accessible.
Fall can make it easier to inspect, service and access your septic system before frozen ground and snow make the job more difficult.

Winter is coming.
Cold temperatures can make septic problems harder to deal with. Fall is a smart time to address maintenance needs before winter settles in.

Prevention beats an emergency.
Taking care of small concerns now may help prevent bigger—and far less convenient—problems during the colder months.

Prepare now. Relax later.

🚽 Think before you flush!
Your toilet is not a trash can—and what goes down it can make a big difference in the health of your septic system.
The simplest rule is also the easiest to remember:
Human waste + toilet paper = FLUSH.
Everything else = TRASH.
Wipes—even many labeled “flushable”—along with paper towels, feminine hygiene products, diapers, dental floss, condoms and other household items can clog plumbing and cause problems for your septic system. EPA septic guidance recommends flushing only human waste and toilet paper.
Save yourself a headache and keep a wastebasket handy in the bathroom.
Think before you flush. Your septic system will thank you.
